MISSOULA, Mont. — Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey and his wife, Cindy, are mourning the loss of their son and his family after a helicopter crash in Montana.
The National Transportation Safety Board reports the Robinson Helicopters R66 crashed near Ekalaka, Montana. The crash is under investigation.
The Carter County Department of Emergency Services Office confirms law enforcement and first responders were dispatched at approximately 7:22 p.m.
According to a statement from the Darren Bailey/Aaron Del Mar campaign, the couple’s son, Zachary Bailey, his wife, Kelsey, and their two children — 12-year-old Vada Rose and 7-year-old Samuel — were killed in the crash Wednesday evening.
The Baileys’ 10-year-old grandson, Finn, was not on board the helicopter and is safe, the campaign said.
“Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” the statement said. “They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them.”
