The Athletic has live coverage of the 2025 Ryder Cup first pairings and final practice.
Every odd-numbered year, golf trades library-quiet decorum for stadium decibel noise, and Bethpage Black is as loud as this sport gets. The opening ceremony was moved to Wednesday in hopes of dodging a soggy Thursday. Fortunately, the weekend forecast only calls for a slim chance of rain, with humidity lingering in the air Friday.

The Ryder Cup has been staged since 1927, when the United States first faced Great Britain, and it remains the sport’s rare team crucible: 24 players split between the United States and Europe, chasing not money or world ranking points but pride. (U.S. players do receive a stipend, though, with a chunk set aside for their charity of choice.)
The structure is designed for tension, with foursomes and four-ball on Friday and Saturday and 12 singles on Sunday. The Friday pairings will be announced Thursday. Twenty-eight points are available, and 14 1/2 are needed to win.
Europe has controlled the modern rivalry, winning eight of the last 11, including Rome in 2023. Luke Donald returns as Europe’s captain, while Keegan Bradley leads the U.S. for the first time. The home team has won the last five Ryder Cups, and Bethpage’s size and sound should favor the Americans.
The United States opened as the favorite at BetMGM, listed at -140 and Europe at +150. The chance for a tie, in which case Europe would keep the Ryder Cup, is at +1200. That reflects edge, not certainty.
Europe’s last win on U.S. soil was in 2012, at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. Expect Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy — the world’s No. 1- and No. 2-ranked golfers, respectively — to set the pace. Team Europe’s Tommy Fleetwood and Team USA’s Patrick Cantlay have a habit of turning narrow matches.
The story starts on the first tee Friday morning, with everything after shaped by noise, matchups and pressure putts.
