Approximately 58 million pounds of corn dog and sausage-on-a-stick products are being recalled because they may be contaminated with “extraneous material,” particularly pieces of wood embedded in the batter.
On Sept. 27, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall from The Hillshire Brands Company.
The FSIS notes that the issue was discovered when Hillshire received multiple consumer complaints of wood in the batter, five of which involved injuries. After an investigation, the company determined that wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering.
The FSIS says it has received no additional reports of injury from consumption of these products thus far, but that anyone concerned about an injury should contact a health care provider.
Which Corn Dog Products Were Affected?
The corn dog and sausage on a stick products were packaged between March 17 and Sept. 26 and include several types of products from Jimmy Dean, State Fair and an unbranded food label, according to a list of the products subject to recall made available by FSIS.
The products subject to recall have the establishment number “EST-582” or “P-894” printed on the packaging. A full document showing the labels of impacted products can be found here.
Where Were These Products Sold?
These affected corn dogs were sold online and shipped to retail and food service locations nationwide.
They were also sold to school districts and Department of Defense facilities nationwide. The FSIS notes that the products were distributed to schools from commercial sales and were not part of food provided by the USDA for the National School Lunch Program.
What To Do If You Have Any Affected Products
If you find a recalled item in your refrigerator or freezer, the FSIS recommends throwing it away. Consumers, schools and institutions who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them; they should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
