Third quarter
BYU 24, Stanford 0
3:36 — Sione Moa, welcome back to the end zone.
BYU’s talented sophomore running back powered his way for an 8-yard touchdown, his first of the season. BYU 24, Stanford 0.
The Cougars began their 5-play, 43-yard scoring drive in favorable position thanks to a 44-yard punt return by the former Stanford receiver Tiger Bachmeier.
Though the drive was short, Bear Bachmeier looked a bit improved, handling Stanford’s pressure better and finding LJ Martin and Chase Roberts for a pair of completions to pick up 24 combined yards.
BYU has now totaled 245 yards of offense on the night, with 136 coming on the ground.
8:56 — Will Ferrin’s third field goal of the night puts BYU ahead by 17 points. BYU 17, Stanford 0.
The Cougars traveled 72 yards on 13 plays to set up the field goal, though they were heavily aided by 30 free yards from three Stanford penalties.
On third down at the 3-yard line, Bachmeier had Chase Roberts open for a walk-in touchdown, only for Roberts to commit an untimely drop and force BYU to settle for three points rather than six.
Halftime
BYU 14, Stanford 0
It was a tale of two units for BYU in the first 30 minutes of play.
The Cougar defense was outstanding, shutting out Stanford, allowing just 29 total yards of offense and racking up three sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception and a safety.
BYU’s offense, however, has been a different story.
Aside from 86 rushing yards from LJ Martin, the Cougars have picked up just 74 yards offensively. Penalties and sloppiness have plagued BYU, and quarterback Bear Bachmeier has struggled to find any rhythm in the passing game while also being sacked three times amid near-constant blitzing and pressure.
Additionally, the Cougars are 2 of 10 on third down tries, needing to clean up such an effort in order to get more out of Bachmeier and company.
BYU will receive the second half kickoff in hopes of improving its offensive output down the stretch.
Second quarter
BYU 14, Stanford 0
5:14 — BYU’s offense may be struggling a bit tonight, but the Cougars’ defense is now pitching in on the scoring effort.
BYU added two more points in the form of a safety, with Faletau Satuala and Jack Kelly tackling Marcus Brown in the end zone on a blown up screen pass. BYU 14, Stanford 0.
The Cougar defense has held Stanford to just 16 total yards thus far, with the Cardinal running backwards for -8 rushing yards.
10:52 — Will Ferrin nets another field goal, this time from 30 yards out. BYU 12, Stanford 0.
Ferrin has now broken the program record for most consecutive field goals with his 20th straight make.
Though the Jack Kelly strip sack gave the Cougars the ball five yards away from the end zone, they weren’t able to punch it in, with a third down sack of Bear Bachmeier derailing the drive for good.
BYU has forced two turnovers already tonight, but the Cougars have only been able to turn them into six points.
12:51 — Jack Kelly adds another memorable highlight to his career reel.
BYU’s standout linebacker came flying in off the edge on third down, sacking Stanford QB Ben Gulbranson and causing him to fumble. Viliami Po’uha recovered the loose ball at the Cardinal 5-yard line. BYU 9, Stanford 0.
Kelly now has six sacks and three forced fumbles during his career with the Cougars.
14:56 — Will Ferrin adds another three points for the Cougars with a 36-yard field goal. BYU 9, Stanford 0.
Ferrin has now made 19 straight field goals dating back to last season.
First quarter
BYU 6, Stanford 0
1:59 — BYU’s defense strikes again.
Safety Raider Damuni picked off an errant Stanford pass and returned it 26 yards to the Cardinal 18-yard line. BYU 6, Stanford 0.
The interception marks Damuni’s first of his three-year Cougars career.
3:25 — Bear Bachmeier is picking up right where he left off last week.
The true freshman QB opened tonight’s scoring with a 3-yard rushing score, barreling through a Stanford defender in order to cross the goal line. BYU 6, Stanford 0.
The Cougars’ 2-point conversion attempt — a funky direct snap to tight end Carsen Ryan — was stopped short.
Most of the work on BYU’s six-play, 85-yard touchdown drive came from LJ Martin, who logged carries of 47 and 11 yards to push the Cougars deep into Cardinal territory.
Bachmeier also made arguably the best throw of his young college career on the drive, splitting a pair of Stanford defenders to find Sione Moa down the sideline for a 17-yard pickup.
With the touchdown, Bachmeier now has six in less than three full quarters of play on the season — three passing, three rushing.
