CNN data guru Harry Enten explained the “real reason” behind U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) decision to resign from Congress next year.
Greene, a former loyalist to President Donald Trump, announced on Friday that she would be resigning from her House seat on Jan. 5, 2026. Her decision comes after weeks of clashing with Trump over the government shutdown, foreign policy and health care proposals.
Enten explained on Monday that Trump’s popularity with the Republican Party may be why Greene decided to not run for reelection.
“When you go up against Donald Trump, you’re going up against a buzzsaw because Donald Trump’s endorsement record — it’s hard to find anyone else who beats it,” Enten said.
He explained that 98% of Trump-endorsed candidates won their GOP primary elections in 2020, 95% won in 2022 and 96% won in 2024.
“The bottom line is this: There was a real reason why Marjorie Taylor Greene decided, ‘You know what, it’s not worth the fight,’ because more times than not, when you go up against Donald Trump in a Republican primary, you lose,” Enten said.
Earlier in the segment, Enten reported that Trump’s support among his Republican base remains strong. According to Enten’s aggregate of polling data, Trump’s approval rating among Republicans stands at 87%—the same number it was six months ago.
“He’s like a rock. The Republican base is sticking by Donald Trump at this point in time. Really is interesting to watch his overall approval rating go down, down, down, but see this be completely constant,” Enten said.
He also noted that Trump’s approval rating among his own party is higher than other previous president’s.
“You can look at 21st-century presidents, own party approval at this point in term two, who leads the pack? It’s Donald John Trump. 87% of Republicans approve Donald John Trump. You go back to 2013, 78% of Democrats supported Barack Obama, and it was 78% of Republicans who supported George W. Bush back in 2005 at this point,” Enten said.
