CNN data chief Harry Enten said American voters have completely turned on President Donald Trump on one of his signature issues from the 2024 presidential campaign: tariffs.
“Look at that,” Enten said as he shared new numbers showing 60% now oppose tariffs. “The opposition, up like a rocket.”
Trump last year repeatedly called tariffs “the most beautiful word” and vowed that imposing them wouldn’t lead to higher prices for American consumers.
Enten said Americans believed him early on, with polls in November showing 52% favored tariffs at the time.
Now that they’re in place and prices are rising, that’s no longer the case as just 40% support tariffs.
“The Americans have gotten a taste of the tariffs and ― ptuh! ― they spit it right out,” Enten said, complete with a spit sound and gesture.
Digging deeper, the numbers get even uglier for Trump, with 77% saying tariffs make products more expensive in the short term and just 4% saying they make things cheaper.
“Look at this itty bitty number at the bottom,” Enten said. “That’s 1, 2, 3, 4. When you can count it on your own hand, you know it’s a small percentage.”
Even over the long-term, more Americans believe tariffs will raise prices ― and that’s having a direct impact on Trump’s sinking approval rating.
“The bottom line is this: When prices go up, presidential approval ratings go down,” he said. “And that’s exactly what we are seeing in the polling.”
