‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Breaks Records For Netflix Original Movie

It’s been nearly three decades since Adam Sandler introduced us to Happy Gilmore, and audiences showed how much the Sandman and his beloved character still resonate following the record-breaking opening weekend of Happy Gilmore 2.

According to the Netflix Top 10 released Tuesday, the film amassed 46.7 million views in its first three days, making it not just best opening ever for an Adam Sandler Netflix film but also the biggest U.S. opening weekend for a Netflix film period. The original 1996 film also came in at No. 3 on this week’s chart with 11.4 million views.

In addition, Sandler’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation was No. 7 in the most recent weekly rankings, while both his Grown Ups move have also recently seen time on the streamer’s viewership charts.

The Happy Gilmore sequel, which bowed on the streamer Friday, also made an impact on the social media front, trending all weekend on X with engagement propelled by celebrity support that included Sandler, Travis Kelce, golf stars Rory Mcllroy and Scottie Scheffler, Post Malone and Guy Fieri. It also benefited from the rare social media support of Taylor Swift, who gave a shout-out to the film (which features her boyfriend Kelce) on Instagram Stories.

The social strength comes as no surprise after Netflix noted earlier this year the largest social engagement for the film’s trailer when it bowed online.

Since signing an exclusive deal with the streamer in 2014, Sandler’s films have always been big hits for Netflix. Even so, Happy Gilmore 2 marked the first time he has turned one of his legacy characters into a sequel for the company. The results suggest it worked out.

Sandler has a busy fall ahead of him starting with his comedy tour Adam Sandler: You’re My Best Friend Tour, which will begin in September and hit 37 arenas. He also has Netflix’s Jay Kelly, which also stars George Clooney and reunites Sandler with his The Meyerowitz Stories director Noah Baumbach. The upcoming dramedy is getting early awards buzz for both the movie and for Sandler.
