Grok has just introduced a notable addition to its iOS app: AI Companions, which are fully 3D animated characters that can interact with users via voice. Currently, the feature includes two available companions – Ani, an anime-inspired character known for a flirty and whispery voice, and Rudy, a red panda capable of displaying different moods, including a “Bad Rudy” mode. The feature is integrated within the voice mode of the app, allowing users to hold conversations with these avatars, who not only change their backgrounds but also progress through levels as users continue interacting. For example, unlocking NSFW options with Ani requires reaching a higher relationship level, while Rudy’s persona shifts can be triggered as part of ongoing dialogue.
BREAKING 🚨: Ani has NSFW mode after lvl 3. No guardrails.

Hints about upcoming additions suggest that more AI Companions are in development, with a male anime character called Chad and another unnamed female character already teased inside the app. The presence of “Coming Soon” avatars and regular updates signals that Grok is investing heavily in expanding this offering. Notably, these digital personas are promoted through their own official accounts on X and appear to be linked to an Animation Inc. company, although it remains unconfirmed whether xAI has acquired this company or is simply collaborating with it.

xAI’s move positions Grok ahead of major competitors, as neither Character AI nor Microsoft has yet launched interactive 3D avatars at this level, despite months of development in the industry. This rollout is particularly noteworthy for users interested in gamified and emotionally nuanced chatbot experiences, as the ability to form relationships with animated companions and unlock new modes adds an element of progression and customization. The timing and format indicate that Grok is aiming to attract users from communities interested in anime, virtual companions, and advanced voice AI, with future updates likely to broaden the roster of characters and deepen in-app social features. Given the quality of execution and market timing, this approach could influence other AI platforms to prioritize similar features in coming months.
