Destiny 2’s Ash & Iron update has added $250+ of new Eververse armor, while Iron Banner’s “new” set is a 2018 reskin, leading to widespread backlash from fans
The free Ash & Iron Major update just dropped this week, bringing new content to Destiny 2. There’s a new exotic mission, two exotic weapons, and, of course, one of the main reasons why many players were looking forward to this update, the return to the Plaguelands, a beloved location originally introduced in the Rise of Iron expansion.
On paper, it sounds like a solid mid-season expansion. But the actual launch? It’s been rocky, maybe even worse than expected. From broken gear to bugged Power progression, players have been running into major issues since the update went live.
Next week also marks the release of the first Iron Banner since Edge of Fate. In a recent round-up article, Bungie told players Iron Banner would feature “an incredibly cool new set of armor,” which naturally had folks expecting a brand-new armor set.
Instead, what showed up was anything but. The “new” Iron Banner armor is a reissue from all the way back in the Warmind expansion, a set that’s now 7 years old. That reveal poured fuel on an already heated discussion: paid Eververse armor vs. earnable armor.
Destiny 2 Ash & Iron Eververse and Iron Banner Controversy
While players were busy checking out the reused Iron Banner gear, they also noticed just how much brand-new content went straight into the Eververse store, behind paywalls. Based on our analysis and what’s in the store right now, Bungie has added four unique armor bundles, one set for each class. That makes it 12 unique paid sets in the Eververse store. (including the upcoming Festival of the Lost armor)
These aren’t counting the second unique Festival of the Lost event set that is coming in the future. If we do count them, that would bump up the total Eververse armor sets to 15. Below, we’ve compiled a list of all the armor-related cosmetics that are either already in the store or confirmed to be on the way, along with their Silver prices:
- Taken Knife Armor (all 3 classes): 4,500 Silver
- Jade Rabbit Armor (all 3 classes): 4,500 Silver
- Ancient Majesty Armor (all 3 classes): 4,500 Silver
- Festival of the Lost Specter Armor (all 3 classes): 4,500 Silver or 6,000 Bright Dust
- Festival of the Lost Slasher Armor (all 3 classes): 4,500 Silver or 6,000 Bright Dust
- 6 Exotic Armor Ornaments (2 each class): 3,600 Silver (600 Silver per piece)
- 6 Legendary Armor Ornaments (2 each class): 3,600 Silver (600 Silver per piece)
Altogether, picking up everything would cost you over 29,000 Silver, which translates to over $250 USD, depending on which bundle you buy. And that’s just counting armor; it doesn’t include any of the new weapon ornaments, shader bundles, Skimmer bundles, emotes, or other cosmetics that were also added this season.
From what I’ve gathered, on the earnable side, Bungie has added five armor sets this season:
- Iron Beryllium set for Iron Banner, which is a reskin from the Warmind expansion
- Smoke Jumper set for the new activity, which is the reskin of TechSec armor
- Disaster Corps set is a reskin of Last Discipline armor
- Epic Desert Perpetual raid armor, which is also a reskin of the original raid armor
- Only one truly new set is in the Rewards Pass, which is called “Vigiland Seraph”
All this has led to dozens of posts across the Destiny-focused subreddits and other social media platforms, with frustrated players calling Bungie out. “We went from about 24 paid sets a year to 36 in TFS, to now potentially double the original with 48 this year,” said one Reddit user.
“Adding that up would make 48 unique paid sets (16 per class), each costing 1500 silver (2000 if collab), so about 72,000 silver, or $600 USD if you only buy the biggest silver bundle.”
Another user didn’t hold back: “Greed is going to kill you, Bungie.” One fan even called for a full boycott of Eververse, writing, “It’s almost like we should all boycott Eververse. They won’t listen to posts, or articles. They’ll only listen to metrics. This has been proven, time and time and… time again.”
Others echoed that same frustration. “It’s like they don’t even want people to play Destiny 2. I remember D1 having so many in-game earnable cosmetics that were awesome to get. Now they reskin old armor and weapons from 30 seasons ago, but it’s okay [because] new perks! This what what makes the game become stale.”
On top of all this, a newly released concept art of an in-game armor strongly suggests that it was originally made for the Iron Banner mode, but was later released as a paid Eververse set in Destiny 2.
