Mike Yastrzemski is coming to the American League.
The San Francisco Giants traded the outfielder to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday in a last-minute deadline deal.
Yastrzemski, the grandson of Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski, is slashing .231/.330/.355 in 96 games for the Giants this season.
The Royals have MLB’s worst outfield, and were looking for ways to improve it at the trade deadline. Yastrzemski primarily plays right field, so Kansas City will need to figure out if Jac Caglianone is still who they envision as the right fielder once he returns from a hamstring strain.
Whether Yastrzemski is the answer to the Royals’ needs remains to be seen. But at 54-55, the Royals are trying to keep their postseason hopes alive and addressed one of their biggest needs at the deadline.
