Grading all 32 first-round rookies after preseason Week 2

  • Jihaad Campbell looks the part for the Eagles: The 31st overall pick garnered an 85.0 PFF overall grade across 29 snaps in preseason Week 2.
  • Jaxson Dart stays conservative but produces once again: While his average depth of target was just 4.1 yards and nearly 80% of his yards were picked up after the catch, he did what was asked of him and put points on the board.

Preseason Week 2 has come to a close, and many of the NFL’s first rookies are gaining comfort with their new teams. As always, we’ve tracked their snap counts, performance, and principal opponents in order to get an early read on what roles they could play in the regular season.

Pick No. 1: Tennessee Titans: QB Cam Ward

  • Overall Rookie Grade: 46.9 (Rank: 16/17)
  • Principal Opponent: N/A
  • Preseason Week 2 Snaps: 12
  • Preseason Week 2 Grade: 45.2

Ward’s accuracy was a tad off in his second NFL appearance. He started the night with a completion to Elic Ayomanor while rolling to his right, but then completed just one pass thereafter. Ward continues to show that he is unafraid to attack defenses vertically. Through two weeks, his average depth of target is a whopping 11.5 yards. For the most part, he was making good decisions despite missing a few throws.

Pick No. 2: Jacksonville Jaguars: WR/CB Travis Hunter

  • Overall Rookie Grade (Offense): 58.4 (Rank: N/A)
  • Principal Opponent (Offense): N/A
  • Preseason Week 2 Offense Snaps: 0
  • Preseason Week 2 Offense Grade: N/A
  • Overall Rookie Grade (Defense): 49.8 (Rank: N/A)
  • Principal Opponent (Defense): N/A
  • Preseason Week 2 Defense Snaps: 0
  • Preseason Week 2 Defense Grade: N/A

Hunter was inactive this week due to an upper-body injury.

Pick No. 3: New York Giants: EDGE Abdul Carter

  • Overall Rookie Grade: 57.3 (Rank: 36/46)
  • Principal Opponent: Armand Membou
  • Preseason Week 2 Snaps: 19
  • Preseason Week 2 Grade: 46.9

Carter put together a mediocre performance this week on 19 snaps against the Jets. His PFF overall grade is dragged down by a mistake he made in zone coverage while lined up at linebacker. Otherwise, he contributed two positive grades in run defense and an unblocked pressure of Jets backup quarterback Adrian Martinez. Expect the Giants to continue to experiment with Carter’s position as he gets more comfortable with the playbook.
