Gov. Reynolds calls ICE arrest of Des Moines superintendent “shocking”

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a statement on the arrest of Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts, calling it “shocking.”

The Des Moines Public School District announced Friday that ICE agents detained Dr. Roberts.

The press release states that Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents detained Dr. Ian Roberts Friday morning for being in the country illegally and in the possession of a loaded handgun. Federal law does prohibit those in the country illegally from possessing weapons.

The DHS says after officers identified themselves to Roberts, he fled the scene in his vehicle. The vehicle was later found abandoned near a wooded area. State Patrol helped locate Roberts and he was taken into ICE custody.

On Saturday, Governor Reynolds said while the arrest was shocking, laws must be enforced.

You can read the statement from Governor Reynolds in full below:

“The arrest on Friday of Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts was shocking, particularly his attempt to evade authorities, and the loaded gun, knife, and large sum of cash found in his vehicle. The investigation is still underway, so I won’t comment on details of the case at this time. But I want to be clear: we are a nation of laws that must be enforced. Those who believe immigration laws are optional are dangerously wrong. When laws are ignored, or when people are led to believe there will be no consequences, our communities are at risk. Iowans won’t stand for that. We must enforce the law, every time, to protect our families and our future.”
