Google made a bunch of announcements at the Made by Google 2025 event today, including the Pixel 10 series. The new Pixel phones come with a handful of upgrades, like the new custom Google Tensor G5 chip, improved cameras, and built-in Qi2 charging support. In addition, Google has finally adopted the faster UFS 4.0 storage type on the Pixel 10 series.
It’s the first major storage spec upgrade on a Pixel phone in four generations. Google has been offering the older UFS 3.1 storage in every phone since the Pixel 6 series.
The UFS 4.0 storage type will offer a faster phone experience on the Google Pixel 10 series
The new storage tech will be able to offer a snappier phone experience, thanks to faster read and write speeds. For one, the UFS 4.0 storage type on the Google Pixel 10 series delivers faster read/write speeds. UFS 3.1 storage provides a maximum 2,100 MB/s reading and 1,200 MB/s writing speeds. In comparison, the UFS 4.0 type delivers a much higher 4,200 MB/s read and 2,800 MB/s write.
Furthermore, the new storage standard is also considerably more power-efficient, resulting in better overall battery life for the Pixel phones. It’s worth mentioning that the UFS 4.0 storage in the Google Pixel 10 range probably won’t mean a lot for end users. However, it’s still great to see Google switching to the newer standard. Major flagship-tier Android phone makers already moved on to the UFS 4.0 standard quite a while ago.
Not all Google Pixel 10 storage variants support the new standard
According to reports, not every Pixel 10 series phone supports the UFS 4.0 standard. The vanilla Pixel 10 128GB and Pixel 10 Pro 128GB variants still have support for the older UFS 3.1 type storage. However, all the new Pixel 10 phones with 256GB of storage and higher support the UFS 4.0 storage.
Furthermore, the Pixel 10 Pro devices (including XL and Fold) also have “Zoned UFS” support on their 512GB of higher storage variants.
In a statement to Android Authority, Google said that this tech “provides even faster responses and quicker app launches for users who need the most performance from their on-device storage.” We will inform you more about the ZUFS tech once the company fully explains it.
