Google Pixel 10 supports satellite voice, video calls in WhatsApp

The Pixel 10 series might’ve been unveiled two days ago, but we’re still learning about some of Google’s latest features. Today’s announcement comes hand-in-hand with WhatsApp, as the two companies are bringing voice and video calls over satellite as an initial exclusive.

The Made By Google account on Twitter was the first to announce the news, followed quickly by a cheeky reply from the official WhatsApp account. Although the video (embedded below) is short on details, the gist is simple. Starting on August 28th — the official launch day for the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, and 10 Pro XL — WhatsApp will support Google’s satellite connectivity to deliver both voice and video calls while off the grid. The video shows a render of a Pixel device answering a WhatsApp call while satellite mode is active.

There is a small amount of fine print shown at the beginning of the video, though it too doesn’t offer many specifics. In addition to the usual “restrictions, terms, and conditions apply” spiel, Google also notes that satellite service will only work with participating carriers and may include surcharges on top of your usual bill. Otherwise, it’s the typical requirements for all satellite calls — an outdoor area with visible sky — while warning that the overall service may be delayed compared to your typical cell network experience. We’ll have to wait for a full blog post for more details.
