While we’re still waiting on a wider rollout, Google is detailing how to use its new “Remix” feature in Photos, which allows users to turn their pictures into cartoon art styles.
Announced in July alongside its photo-to-video generation tool, Google Photos is also adding a “Remix” feature that can take a photo and turn it into one of four new cartoon art styles including:
- 3D animation
- Anime
- Sketch
- Comic book
The feature provides a quick and native way to generate these images which, thanks to AI tools such as ChatGPT, have become very popular on social media in the past year or two. Those tools typically involve uploading the image to the AI app, wait on image generation, and then download the image for sharing. Google’s version does it all in the photo app you’re probably already using. Plus, “Remix” in Google Photos is a free feature of the app, rather than requiring a subscription as is the case for many other AI-powered alternatives.
Google, in a post, explains how to use “Remix” in the Photos app. Like photo-to-video generation, the option appears under the “Create” button at the top of your photo feed.
Google says:
- On your mobile device, open the Google Photos app.
- At the top right, tap Create new and then Remix.
- To try out Remix, tap Try now.
- Select a style.
- To choose a photo that you want to edit, tap Choose photo.
- To change your selected photo, tap Change photo.
- Tap Generate.
- You can save and share your edited photo:
- To save the photo, tap Save.
- To share the photo, tap Share.
The post goes on to explain that, after an image has been generated, you can press the “Regenerate” button to get a new version. The company also notes that the feature is “experimental” and that “generated images may not perfectly match the original photo.”
However, Google has yet to widely roll out this new feature. Like the new photo editor that’s also not yet available to everyone, “Remix” seems to be a part of a server-side update. If you do have access, let us know in the comments!
