Goldberg retires after losing to GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event

Goldberg long wanted a final match in WWE to act as his official retirement bout, one last chance to do something special in front of his friends and family. He got just that at tonight’s (Sat., July 12, 2025) Saturday Night’s Main Event special in Atlanta, Georgia, in a world heavyweight championship match against GUNTHER.

He was walked to the ring by friends from the past, and others like Diamond Dallas Page were in attendance to be there for it.

For anyone wondering if Goldberg would take many chops from GUNTHER, he ate the first two while smiling but sold for them later. Hey, a man can only take so much, even if that man is Bill Goldberg.

They booked this less like a Goldberg match and more like a GUNTHER match, with the champion wearing the challenger down but with a hope spot thrown in there. When Goldberg got the spear and the Jackhammer, a new referee running in gave some hope. But it was not to be.

It was time to say goodbye once and for all.

They didn’t have much time left to give him a moment in the ring on the live broadcast but he did get the chance to say goodbye with a ring full of his friends and family.

So long.
