Giants training camp: What we learned on Day 8

The New York Giants wrapped up their eighth training camp practice in full pads on Friday. Overcast skies, wind, and chilly weather accompanied the Giants during an eventful session that featured five team periods with two-minute drill and red zone periods concluding the practice.

Quarterback stats

Here are the quarterback stats through the five periods:

  • Russell Wilson: 10 of 19 with a touchdown and two interceptions (one possible sack on the completion)
  • Jaxson Dart: 6 of 10 with a touchdown (including several designed QB runs)
  • Jameis Winston: 4 of 11 (two exceptional passes during two minute drill; had three drops. A solid RPO glance to Pascal was dropped as well)
  • Tommy DeVito had a rough practice. He missed several throws and had a pair of interceptions. The first interception was O’Donnell Fortune. The second was a one-handed-snag by Dee Williams; on the next play, DeVito almost threw another interception that was dropped by Makari Paige.

Overall, the quarterbacks didn’t impress. The defense made several plays on the football throughout practice. Russell Wilson threw two interceptions. His first ended the two-minute drill period; in fairness, there wasn’t much time left on the clock and Wilson was trying to overcome a six-point deficit with seconds left, but Tyler Nubin ended the period with this interception:

Dane Belton baited Wilson into a throw to Wan’Dale Robinson in the next team-period (red zone drills). Wilson tried to put the ball over Tae Banks, but Belton was waiting:

It wasn’t all bad for Wilson. He did find Malik Nabers for a touchdown on the backside of a play against Paulson Adebo:

Daily Dart

Dart started the two-minute drill with two consecutive completion to the tight ends. He hit Thomas Fidone II on a quick 5-yard out before rushing to the line of scrimmage to quickly call a play that resulted in a 12-yard seam ball to Daniel Bellinger.

After a spike of the football (not counted above), he found Dalen Cambry for five yards on a quick in breaking route and Dalen Cambry for 12 yards on a seven that went out of bounds. Brian Daboll ended that portion of the two-minute drill and put Jameis Winston in back at the 5-yard line.

Dart didn’t receive the opportunity to drive the whole length of the field but he appeared comfortable and in control of the offense during the high-pressure two minute drill.

Dart received reps with the second team exclusively. He threw his touchdown pass in the red zone to Lil’Jordan Humphrey:

Solid touch on the football for six. Dart did hold onto the ball too long on a few occasions, including the throw above. It didn’t appear like he would have been sacked, but it’s hard to tell. He did a good job maneuvering the pocket and finding a clean throwing avenue.

One-on-ones: DL vs. OL

The offensive line was respectable during the one-on-one drills that naturally put them at a disadvantage, although it was the offense who performed push-ups at the end of the drill. Jermaine Eluemunor matched and defeated Brian Burns twice during the period, which set up the final rep which would determine the side of the football who would be focusing on their pectorals. Burns beat Eluemunor around the edge and cornered into the pocket, winning the final rep and sparing the defenders from the push ups. It was the only rep Eluemunor “lost” during the period.

Evan Neal and James Hudson III both had solid periods as well. Neal’s anchor and hands prevented him from losing, which drew praise from the crowd watching from a distance. Neal did lose one rep to Rakeem Nunez-Roches, who tightly turned and won with leverage through Neal’s outside shoulder.

Hudson III stopped Kayvon Thibodeaux up the arc and matched him through the whistle; then, after the whistle, he gave Thibodeaux an extra bump — of course! Marcus Mbow had an excellent rep against Tomon Fox. Mbow stayed low and coiled until he attacked; a very disciplined play by the young rookie. Mbow also got pushed back slightly by Darius Alexander, but Mbow recovered well and won the overall rep.

Bryan Hudson did a great job against Roy Robertson-Harris when the veteran defensive lineman attempted to use power. Hudson restricted space and won with a low-hat, ending Robertson-Harris’ efforts. Then there’s Abdul Carter:

Carter’s control and pass-rushing repertoire — coupled with his elite movement skills and burst — have been a primary topic of camp and rightfully so. He’s almost unblockable in these one-on-one drills and defeating him is a tall task for any offensive linemen. He feasted on the interior OL in today’s one-on-one drills.

Other practice notes

  • Tyrone Tracy Jr. had a couple long runs with the first team:
  • All three of the running backs received first-team reps.
  • Skattebo had a few nice runs but left practice early — he missed the previous two practices; Dan Duggan stated on ‘X’ that he believes Skattebo is dealing with a hamstring.
  • Devin Singletary received a substantial amount of reps with the first team even before Skattebo’s exit.
  • The Giant have found creative ways to use wide receivers Darius Slayton and Malik Nabers in the rushing attack; they’ve also run the football frequently with QBs Jaxson Dart and Tommy DeVito.
  • Before finding Nabers for a TD in red zone drills, Russell Wilson scrambled up the middle for an easy 10-yard touchdown.
  • Theo Johnson was used often near the line of scrimmage as a receiver.
  • Pre-snap penalties on both side of the football continued to plague the Giants.
  • Coach Brian Daboll pulled players who committed these penalties.
  • The Giants’ defense has struggled to fit the run early in camp — continued today (Little to no Dex out there).
  • The second- and third-team rushing attacks created little to no push against the defense.
  • Marcus Mbow and Montrell Washington received first-team reps.
  • During individual drills, wide receiver coach Mike Groh yelled “keep your hips down” multiple times at Jalin Hyatt and Zach Pascal during route running drills.
  • After practice, Jordan Bly worked with the Jugs machine, catching passes for 15 minutes.
