Brian Daboll stopped short of announcing a quarterback change Monday, but he also notably would not rule out replacing Russell Wilson with prized rookie Jaxson Dart this week against the Chargers.
Daboll’s series of non-committal answers open up an intriguing week for the Giants, who are off to an ugly 0-3 start following Sunday night’s 22-9 loss to the Chiefs.
“We are evaluating everything right now,” Daboll said Monday on a Zoom call. “We’re working through all personnel decisions and we’ll do that over the next few days.
“We’re doing what we normally do…We’re going through the tape and I’d say we’re evaluating everything.”
Daboll’s answers were interesting in that he committed to Wilson when asked similar questions one day after a Week 1 loss to the Commanders.
Asked when the Giants would announce a decision Daboll added, “I’m not saying who’s starting or who’s not starting, I’m just saying we’re evaluating everything right now. We’re going through the tape from [Sunday] and we’re evaluating every position right now. I’m going through the passing game right now…and there’s a number of things: protection to routes to throws to reads. We have to do a better job collectively to improve the pass game. We had one good game throwing the football, and then [Sunday] we took a step back and need to improve in that area.”
Wilson played poorly Sunday night, and fans at MetLife Stadium chanted “We want Dart” for the rookie late in the first half. Dart got into the game for only three running plays in the third and fourth quarter. He has yet to throw an NFL pass while appearing briefly in two of the Giants’ three games, all losses.
The 36-year-old Wilson had recorded a career-high 450 yards in an overtime loss to the Cowboys in Week 2, but he was picked off twice by the Chiefs, including once in the end zone in the second quarter. The 10-time Pro Bowler registered just 39 of his 160 passing yards before halftime and was booed when he came back on the field following Dart’s handful of snaps.
“I think there’s highs and lows and there’s always tough moments,” Wilson said after the game. “You gotta have thick skin, you gotta be able to know who you are, know the player you are and what you’re capable of.
“Obviously, I’ve shown that throughout my career and obviously last week too what we’re capable of as an offense. They made a couple of more plays than us [Sunday], but I’m confident in myself and confident in us.”
The Giants traded up to take Dart with the 25th overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft out of Ole Miss.
The 22-year-old QB said after the game that he “didn’t hear” the chants of his name by the crowd.
“I mean, I like being on the field. I try to just do my job when I’m out there,” Dart said. “I’m just trying to be a really good teammate. It’s hard when the offense isn’t playing up to standard.”
