George Clooney is one of the most well-known silver foxes in Hollywood, but at age 64, he’s putting aside any “vanity” he has around his changing appearance. In a rare interview with CBS News that aired on Sunday, November 2, the Ocean’s Eleven alum opened up about aging, including how it’s impacted his marriage with Amal Clooney.
Chatting with Seth Doane about his latest film Jay Kelly, Clooney didn’t waste time when he was asked if he wanted to check how he looked in the camera before filming their segment. “I don’t care about that. I’m too old,” he responded, later explaining, “You have to let go of that, you know, if you’re hanging on to any kind of vanity at 64 years old … you’re chasing your tail, man. It’s going to bite you.”
While Clooney joked that there’s plenty of paparazzi photos of him and Amal where he looks like an “idiot,” he said he’s come to terms with aging and has also noticed a positive change in his personality getting older. “It’s aging or death. Those are the two options, right? I’m okay with it. You know, I feel more grounded. Certainly I’m less angry,” he shared during the candid segment.

Pressed for details, the Wolfs actor explained that this new outlook is part of the reason why he and his wife Amal have famously never had an argument. “Well, when you’re younger, you want to be right about everything, you know, don’t paint that color wall,” he said. “You know, Amal and I, famously, everybody gets ticked off when I say it, but we’ve never had a fight. We’ve never had an argument. And some of it is because I’m at this point in life, where if she wants to paint a wall red, I don’t care.”

He added, “You get to a point in life where you just go, ‘Well, why would that be a discussion or an argument?’ We have a really amazing relationship because we’re also so supportive of each other. But when I was younger, I don’t know that that would have been the case. I think I would have found things to, you know, stick my chest out about that I can now go, it doesn’t matter. I don’t care.”

In addition to praising his lawyer wife, whom he called the “most extraordinary human I’ve ever met” and a “force for good,” Clooney also shared rare comments on what he and Amal are like as parents. “You’ll have to ask our kids in about 10 years when they’re in therapy,” he joked. “ We’re present, which is fine. I get to drive them to school most of the time, which is fun. Amal is so present and so there and such a great mom. We have very happy kids. We’ll see. I mean, everybody screws it up somewhere along the way. So we’re just trying to do the least of it as we can.”
