The staff for Chinese developer miHoYo‘s Genshin Impact game announced on Wednesday that the game will end service on PlayStation 4 on September 10. Update support for the game will eventually end on April 8, 2026, due to limitations related to hardware performance and platform application size. The game on PlayStation 5 will not be affected and will continue to operate normally.
Genshin Impact on PS4 will be removed from the PlayStation Store on September 10. PlayStation Network accounts that have never downloaded the game before on PS4 will no longer be able to search for or download the game via the PlayStation Store, but accounts that have previously downloaded the game can download it again even if it was deleted from the device.
All in-game purchases for the game will be removed from both the PlayStation Store and the in-game shop on February 25, 2026. The game will then cease all update support on PS4 on April 8, 2026. Players will then no longer be able to log in to the game, installations of the game on PS4 will stop receiving update patches, and any items purchased from the PlayStation Store, but are still not claimed, can only be obtained by logging into Genshin Impact on PS5.
HoYoverse launched the free-to-play Genshin Impact game worldwide in September 2020. The game is available on iOS, Android, PC, PS4, and PS5. The game launched for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming in November 2024.
HoYoverse describes the game:
Step into Teyvat, a vast world teeming with life and flowing with elemental energy.
You and your sibling arrived here from another world. Separated by an unknown god, stripped of your powers, and cast into a deep slumber, you now awake to a world very different from when you first arrived.
Thus begins your journey across Teyvat to seek answers from The Seven — the gods of each element. Along the way, prepare to explore every inch of this wondrous world, join forces with a diverse range of characters, and unravel the countless mysteries that Teyvat holds…
In September 2022, HoYoverse announced it is collaborating with anime studio ufotable for a “long-term collaboration project” for the game. The game has inspired several animated shorts by the in-house miHoYoAnime studio.
miHoYo‘s Honkai Impact 3rd game has also previously inspired several anime and animated projects.
