WARREN, MI — General Motors has laid off hundreds of employees, the company confirmed Friday.
The automaker laid off 200 staff at its Warren Technical Center on Friday, Oct. 24. This is a part of a restructuring of GM’s design engineering team, and as a result, a number of computer-aided design execution roles have been eliminated, GM Spokesperson Stuart Fowle wrote in an email
“We recognize the efforts and accomplishments of the impacted team members, and we thank them for their contributions,” Fowle wrote.
According to Bloomberg, employees received the message around 7 a.m. stating that the firings were due to ‘business conditions’ and not their performance.
This year, GM reported stronger-than-expected earnings for the third quarter and boosted its profit forecast. The automaker was helped by policy changes that supported sales of high-margin, gas-powered SUVs and trucks, according to Bloomberg.
