As promised, Gemini is officially launching on Google TV today, but most users will still have to wait a little bit longer.
Gemini for Google TV was first announced early this year, but it’s been a long wait to get to the release. Today, Gemini is officially making its big screen debut, but only on a single TV series.
The previously announced TCL QM9K series will be the first with Gemini support. This TV also serves as the showcase for new presence-sensing features on Google TV that can turn on the screen based on whether you’re in the room. The QM9K series starts at $3,000.
As for the rest of the Google TV ecosystem – including the Google TV Streamer – Google just says to expect a rollout “later this year.” The company also slightly hints that Gemini might require a bit of extra horsepower, as its initial list of devices with support all being higher-end TV sets or streaming boxes. For example, the Walmart Onn 4K Pro is mentioned, but not the 4K Plus. The Google TV Streamer is also mentioned, but not Chromecast.
Later this year, Gemini will be available on more devices, including the Google TV Streamer, Walmart onn. 4K Pro, 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX models, and 2025 TCL QM7K, QM8K, and X11K models.
We’ll have to wait and see how broadly it rolls out, but it’s also possible we’re just looking at a staggered rollout. Speaking to 9to5Google, Google added that Android 14 is required for Gemini on Google TV which further limits the list of supported devices.
Gemini will replace Assistant on the platform, adding new capabilities and improved handling of natural language queries.
Google specifically lays out some key use cases for Gemini on Google TV as follows:
- For the group: Movie night doesn’t need to be a debate. Finding something everyone can agree on is as simple as asking, “Find me something to watch with my wife. I like dramas, but she likes lighthearted comedies.”
- For the catch-up: When a new season of your favorite show launches, get up to speed in an instant. Just ask, “What happened in the last season of ‘Outlander’?”
- For the vague search: Can’t remember the name of that new show everyone’s talking about? Just describe it. “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?” Gemini will recommend a few options, like “The Pitt.”
The company also points out that Gemini can be used for education and learning, as was also shown back in January’s preview, with the AI assistant able to leverage YouTube videos and more based on natural language questions.
The company also teases that this is “just the start, with more Gemini capabilities on TV coming soon.”
Notably, the company’s image showing off Gemini on Google TV also shows off the slight homescreen redesign that we first reported on last week.
