Gamecock assistant coach in hospital after car wreck in SC

COLUMBIA — South Carolina defensive line coach Travian Robertson is in stable condition after a two-car collision claimed the life of the other vehicle’s driver on the morning of Aug. 22.

The driver of a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder was driving west on U.S. 76 near Chapin at approximately 5:45 a.m. when it crossed left of center and hit Robertson’s 2024 Chevy Tahoe head-on, a South Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman said. The operator of the Pathfinder passed away at the scene.

Robertson was transported to Prisma Health with injuries.

“He is currently in the hospital in stable condition. We expect him to make a full recovery and be back out on the field soon,” USC confirmed in a statement the night of Aug. 22. “Please keep the families of those involved in the accident in your prayers and respect the Robertson family’s privacy during this time.”

Robertson, 36, is entering his third season with the Gamecocks. He played defensive tackle for USC from 2007-11, where he was a team captain as a senior and then drafted by the Atlanta Falcons.

The No. 13 Gamecocks begin their season on Aug. 31 against Virginia Tech in Atlanta. While Robertson is recovering, USC could turn to several staffers to step in and coach the defensive line.

Kevin Hubbard is the assistant DL coach, while Jordan Dove is another defensive assistant specifically working with the line. USC also added former Temple/Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins this season as a senior defensive assistant coach.
