Cameras on Samsung’s flagship phones are generally pretty great for everyday use, but most people notice a common issue: motion blur in images with moving subjects. This is mainly due to the camera’s slow shutter speed. However, Samsung claims to have improved this with the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Samsung claims that the 200MP rear-facing camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 brings several improvements over the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 50MP primary rear camera. One of those improvements includes a 7x faster shutter speed. If what Samsung claims is true, the phone should be able to capture images of moving subjects without motion blur. At least, there should be fewer instances of images having the motion blur issue.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra uses the same camera sensor and processing chipset, and Samsung did talk about shutter speed improvements, but it didn’t offer any numbers like it did for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. So how effective is this improvement in real life scenarios?
We noticed in ArsTechnica’s review of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 that it was able to capture a clear shot of a couple of greyhound dogs running. However, the image was shot outdoors in decent light conditions. It remains to be seen how the phone’s camera performs in unideal lighting conditions.
The South Korean firm also claimst that the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s camera brings the following improvements:
- 200MP camera can capture 44% brighter images with 4x more details than Galaxy Z Fold 6’s primary camera.
- Maintains optical quality 2x zoom shots using the primary camera via in-sensor crop.
- Automatically switches to 12MP ultrawide camera with autofocus for sharper macro shots. It uses Dual Camera Depth Calibration system to detect such scenarios.
- 25% wider selfies with 5x more clarity via 10MP selfie camera embedded into the foldable screen.
- Selfie camera captures images with a more natural skin texture.
- Selfie camera has better HDR processing in the Portrait mode.
- Improved images in low-light conditions using Spatio-Temporal Filter that analyzes individual and multiple frames to reduce noise and separates the subject and the background and processes them differently.
- Improved video recording with 4x richer contrast and a wider dynamic range.
- Captures videos with 10-bit HDR in the HLG format.
- Supports video recording in the LOG format. Those videos can be edited and the colors can be tuned more easily using 10-bit HEVC codec.
- LOG videos can be color-corrected with a single click using Samsung Look-Up Table (LUT) in the built-in Gallery app.
