Tonight’s Friday Night Baseball game will feature some new camera angles, courtesy of iPhone 17 Pro. For the first time for a professional live sports broadcast, iPhones will be used to help capture the action.
At the Fenway Park game between Tigers and the Red Sox, the production will use four iPhones, getting different angles from across the stadium. When iPhone footage is being used, a ‘Shot on iPhone’ overlay will appear in the corner of the stream.
You can watch Friday Night Baseball at no extra charge, with an Apple TV+ subscription. Tonight’s double-header is the last of the 2025 season, however.
The iPhone 17 Pros will capture live footage from four vantage points around the stadium including the home dugout, and atop the iconic Green Monster left field wall. One will also be used as a roaming wireless RF camera rig.
Apple is using widely available equipment to pull this off, including the Blackmagic Camera app and the recently-announced Blackmagic Camera ProDock.
In a symbol of the iPhone’s resilience as a professional tool, the same four iPhones will be rolling for the duration of the entire game, ready to be cut to at any time. The game director will be able to switch to the iPhone cameras freely throughout the event, including adjusting exposure, white balance and zoom remotely. Everything has been prototyped and tested in secret over the last couple of months.
The iPhone setups will be used in concert with the traditional broadcast cameras. The initiative is part of Apple’s ongoing partnership with MLB to provide innovative production enhancements for its broadcasts, which has already rolled out things like stadium drone shots, helmet cams, and megalodon cameras.
The Shot on iPhone game between the Detroit Tigers and Boston Ded Sox is scheduled to kick off at 7:10 pm Eastern Time. You can watch in the Apple TV app with an an Apple TV+ subscription.
