Police arrested MMA fighter Diego Sanchez for allegedly firing his gun while passing by a crash in Albuquerque.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police arrested former UFC fighter Diego Sanchez for allegedly firing his gun while passing by a crash in Albuquerque.
According to a criminal complaint, a white Jeep was passing by a crash Thursday on westbound I-40 at University Boulevard when officers heard a loud bang from a gun the passenger fired. Officers followed the Jeep and pulled it over in the area of Sixth Street and the frontage road.
An officer put the passenger in handcuffs and took him into custody. They identified him as Diego Sanchez.
Sanchez allegedly told police there was a gun in the backseat of the vehicle but denied firing a shot from the vehicle. However, the driver allegedly told police Sanchez did fire a gun and that he started laughing afterward.
Investigators say, while glancing in the vehicle, they found three live rounds on the front passenger side of the vehicle and a gun in the back pocket of the driver’s seat.
Diego Sanchez now faces charges of shooting at or from a motor vehicle and negligent use of a firearm. He is now in the Metropolitan Detention Center.
The crash slowed I-40 to a crawl Thursday evening.
