Former South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw was hospitalized Wednesday night after he collapsed while coaching his son’s football team.
The city of Simpsonville, South Carolina, said in a statement to WYFF in Greenville, South Carolina, that Shaw collapsed shortly after the game began and is hospitalized in stable condition.
“While coaching his son’s 8U football team at Gracely Park on Wednesday night, Connor Shaw collapsed about 15 minutes after the game started,” the city’s statement said. “EMS arrived on scene and took Mr. Shaw to Greenville Memorial. The Simpsonville Parks Department has been informed Mr. Shaw is in stable condition. Mr. Shaw and his family are in the thoughts and prayers of the employees of Parks and Rec and City of Simpsonville and we wish for a speedy and full recovery.”
The State newspaper said that Shaw was hospitalized in the medical ICU.

Shaw, 33, is one of the most productive quarterbacks in South Carolina history. He played for the Gamecocks from 2010 through 2013 and appeared in 43 games in his career. He completed 65% of his passes for 6,074 yards and 56 TDs with 15 interceptions.
As a senior in 2013, Shaw threw 24 TDs and threw just one interception on 284 pass attempts. He ranks second in career touchdown passes at USC behind Steve Taneyhill and only three Gamecocks players have thrown for more TDs in a single season than Shaw did in 2013.
Shaw signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and appeared in one game for the franchise. He started the team’s 20-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 28, 2014, and was 14-of-28 passing for 177 yards and an interception.

After spending the 2015 season on the sidelines because of a thumb injury, Shaw was claimed by the Chicago Bears off waivers in the summer of 2016. He never appeared in a regular-season game for the franchise, however, after suffering a broken leg that preseason and a hamstring injury during the 2017 preseason.
