An acclaimed rock/metal guitarist is dead at 51 after a motorcycle crash.
NBC reports Brent Hinds, a former member of the Grammy-winning metal band Mastodon, died Wednesday when his Harley Davidson collided with a BMW SUV at an intersection in Atlanta, Georgia. Police said the woman driving the SUV “failed to yield while turning left” but remained at the scene.

“We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans.”
Hinds co-founded Mastodon, who won a Grammy Award for best metal performance in 2018 with “Sultan’s Curse.” The band is also known for heavy metal/hard rock songs like “Blood and Thunder,” “The Motherload,” “Oblivion” and “Show Yourself.”
Mastodon is scheduled to perform at the Alaska State Fair on Friday. Hinds split with the group in March, claiming bandmates Troy Sanders and Brann Dailor “kicked me out of the band for embarrassing them for being who I am.”
Hinds, who had provided lead guitar and vocals for Mastodon since 2000. He also worked with other acts like Fiend Without a Face, The Blood Vessels, West End Motel, Four Hour Fogger, The Last of the Blue Eyed Devils, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, and Legend of the Seagullmen.
