Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has broken his silence on the team trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, McCarthy was asked about his reaction when he learned that Parsons is no longer with the Cowboys.
McCarthy said he met with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in June and they talked about Parsons. McCarthy thought he got the message clear from Jones.
“He felt that him and Micah had a deal,” McCarthy said. “He’s earned that. …From a performance perspective, Micah Parsons earned his contract. There’s no question about that.”
McCarthy added that he thought the Cowboys were going to get a deal done with Parsons since they did the same thing with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. However, that obviously did not come to be.
“The old saying in business is time kills deals,” McCarthy stated. “…I always felt, ‘Hey, no, they’re going to get it done. They’re going to get it done. This is the businessman. Jerry keeping the Cowboys at the front of the news cycle.’ Just didn’t really pay much mind to it.
“As this thing went on longer and longer, any time business transactions are held up, there’s more emotions that come into play here, and this is what can happen. …I just felt this was a deal that took too long. Frankly, I think both sides will benefit.”

Last week, the Cowboys sent Micah Parsons to Green Bay in exchange for first-round picks in 2026 and 2007, and defensive lineman Kenny Clark. The Packers then signed Parsons to a four-year, $188 million contract, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. In his four seasons in Dallas, Parsons recorded 52.5 sacks. He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021, named to the All-Pro Team three times and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.
Mike McCarthy was the Cowboys’ head coach from 2020 to 2024, so he was there for Parsons’ four seasons in Dallas. McCarthy also has ties with the Packers as he was the head coach there from 2006 to 2018 and led the team to a Super Bowl win during the 2010 season.
