Five Thoughts: Virginia Tech vs. Vanderbilt

If ever there was proof that time is a flat circle, with history trapped in an endless loop and events doomed to repeat themselves, Saturday was it.

The Hokies competed for a half, looking pretty good even, then just saw the valve shut off after the break. No offense, no defense, no chance. Vanderbilt roasted Tech in a 44-20 rout, reeling off 34 unanswered points.

It sure felt a lot like a 45-10 loss to Duke in 2019, when absolutely nothing went Tech’s way after a solid first quarter. The Blue Devils embarrassed the Hokies with an avalanche of points over the final three quarters, a boomerang of a result that felt unique in Tech history — until Saturday.

Hence the flat circle remark. Let’s just say the season isn’t off to a great start if you’re quoting Rust Cohle after Week 2.
