The North Carolina Department of Health and Human
Services announced Wednesday North Carolina’s first reported case of West Nile
virus in 2025.
Officials said the case was found in a Durham County
resident.
Officials have not released the name of the person who
tested positive.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the
West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the
continental United States. The virus is commonly spread to people by the bite
of an infected mosquito.
The CDC said there is no vaccine to prevent or
medicines to treat West Nile in people. The best way to reduce the risk is to protect
yourself from mosquito bites.
