The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now in theaters, and while the film is mostly disconnected from the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the post-credits scene effectively plants the seeds of what fans can expect from the team’s involvement in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The post-credits sequence features a brief tease for a major villain, getting fans excited about how the character will look, especially since there haven’t been any official photos of the design until now. Interestingly, Vanessa Kirby, who plays Sue Storm, has revealed a fun tidbit about the filming of the post-credits scene, specifically about which major actor was involved.
While promoting the movie shortly after its release, Kirby was asked if Robert Downey Jr. was behind the cloak and metal mask in the First Steps post-credit scene. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the small scene that played after the credits featured Sue’s son Franklin coming face-to-face with Doctor Doom, whose back is turned to the camera, before the scene abruptly ends. While incredibly brief, this scene marks Doom’s official entry into the MCU, and now Kirby has confirmed that it was indeed Downey on set that day.

Robert Downey Jr. Undergoing “Intense” Process To Prep for Doctor Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Robert Downey Jr. is digging deep into his research to play Doctor Doom in the MCU.
The Invisible Woman actress revealed it was Downey as Doom, saying, “Robert’s never not been on set. He’s always there. He is our leader. We call him our Godfather. He’s looked after us. It’s such a joy working with the Russos and him, because they’ve had such deep collaboration for so long.” Given that this is technically the iconic villain’s MCU debut, it would have felt odd not to have Downey on set, despite not having any lines and just being in the frame.
Robert Downey Jr. Is Fully Committed to the MCU & ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Vanessa Kirby, along with the rest of the Fantastic Four cast, has been busy with the production of Avengers: Doomsday, which is already a challenge itself. Add to that the fact that Kirby is currently pregnant, and it could have made for a difficult production for her. Thankfully, the actor has said that working with Marvel Studios and Downey in particular helped to make sure it’s been a smooth process, saying: “And it’s been amazing being pregnant and working on Avengers, I felt so inspired and so relieved that I’ve been so taken care of. It’s been a really beautiful journey. Robert is just doing incredible work. I’m so excited.”
In some ways, Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU couldn’t have come at a better time, with the actor coming off of a Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for his role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Downey’s immense and prestigious talent, paired with his near-universal appeal thanks to his years as Iron Man, has instantly elevated Avengers: Doomsday into a highly anticipated event film.
Many have been curious about what his approach to the role of Doom will look like, with even a brief tease, such as what was seen at the end of First Steps, has made fans excited. Doomsday is set for release in December of next year, meaning it will be some time before we get to have another look at Doctor Doom. For those who want to see the character’s first MCU appearance, Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in theaters.
