Disney’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” claimed the top spot at the U.K. and Ireland box office with a strong debut of £8.1 million ($10.8 million), according to Comscore.
Holding firm at No. 2, Warner Bros.’ “Superman” added $2.5 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $28.7 million. Universal’s animated sequel “The Bad Guys 2” debuted in third place with $2.1 million.
“Jurassic World Rebirth” was pushed to fourth but held well, earning $2.1 million in its fourth weekend for a cumulative total of $38.5 million. Warner Bros.’ racing drama “F1” rounded out the top five with $867,818, pushing its cume to $26.3 million after five weeks.
In a notable jump, Yash Raj Films’ Bollywood romantic drama “Saiyaara” climbed from 10th to sixth place with $675,380, taking its total to $1.3 million. Paramount’s “Smurfs” followed in seventh with $642,120 for a total of $3.7 million, while Sony’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” took $503,886 in its second week to reach $2.6 million.
Universal’s “How To Train Your Dragon” was ninth, collecting $398,880 and lifting its total to $28.7 million. Sony’s “28 Years Later” rounded out the top ten with $232,836, for a cume of $20.2 million.
The week ahead brings a wide-ranging mix of tentpoles, reissues, independent titles and international fare.
On Wednesday July 30, Trafalgar Releasing unleashes “BTS Army: Forever We Are Young,” a fan-focused concert film tapping into the global K-pop phenomenon. The following day, Thursday July 31, Dreamz Entertainment launches Indian, Telugu-language action film “Kingdom,” starring Vijay Deverakonda.
Friday, Aug. 1 sees a flurry of openings. Among the widest releases is Paramount’s “The Naked Gun” reboot. Also on wide release is “The Legend of Ochi” from Entertainment Film Distributors, a fantasy adventure starring Helena Zengel, Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson and Willem Dafoe.
Modern Films brings “Oslo Stories Trilogy: Dreams,” a Norwegian drama directed by Dag Johan Haugerud, which won three awards at the Berlinale earlier this year. Vertigo Releasing’s SXSW title “40 Acres” and Berlinale selection “Late Shift,” Park Circus’ 2K restoration of Stephen Frears’ “My Beautiful Laundrette,” and Bulldog’s documentary “Dogspiracy” and Sundance winner “2000 Meters to Andriivka” round out the indie slate.
Animated fare includes “Savages,” a family-friendly tale from Claude Barras being distributed by MetFilm, and “Heidi: Rescue of the Lynx,” an adventure from Kaleidoscope Entertainment.
Indian releases also include Zee Studios’ “Dhadak 2,” which is a Bollywood remake of Tamil-language hit “Pariyerum Perumal,” Dreamz Entertainment’s animated mythological “Mahavatar Narsimha,” Kannada-language “Su From So” and Moviegoers Entertainment’s “Son Of Sardaar 2,” headlined by Ajay Devgn.
Sony Pictures previews the horror feature “Bring Her Back” ahead of a wider rollout. Finally, Sunday, Aug. 3 will see Anime Ltd release a 4K reissue of Mamoru Hosoda’s “Summer Wars,” rounding off a packed week for cinema-goers.
