Square Enix’s big Final Fantasy 7 Remake project has been going for more than half a decade now, with two games out of the way and what many expect to be the finale of the project on the way. There are a lot of things we don’t know about Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 (or whatever the heck it’s going to be called), so that’s why whenever someone gets Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi in a chair to answer some questions, the future of the series is always up for discussion.
That’s what occurred in a recent interview between Hamaguchi and Wccftech, as he was asked whether there were any plans to bridge the gap between Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the next game with a DLC, similar to the Integrade DLC for the first game which gave us a proper introduction to Yuffie. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen, but Hamaguchi did reveal something rather interesting.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Series Could Get A Fourth Game
“There were definitely some ideas to create a Rebirth DLC and that was the plan at a certain point in time,” says Hamaguchi. “But when we revisited this topic, and we thought about what our priorities should be and what the fans are looking forward to the most, we figured that what fans want the most is to bring the third installment as soon as possible.” It’s a pretty fair assessment, and I’d like to see the third part of the story sooner rather than later, but Hamaguchi did also let slip that the third part may not be the final part.
“With that being said, once we release the third installment, there is the possibility of having a DLC for that third installment. With the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, there’s probably going to be a much wider audience for Final Fantasy as a whole. Whether we bring another new DLC or a full title, that’s something we are actively considering.”
It’s definitely interesting that even though Hamaguchi considers the Remake project a trilogy, he explicitly states that a fourth game is very much a possibility. Final Fantasy 7 fans will know that the game does end with a lot of loose ends dangling in the breeze, and there is the very small matter of Advent Children to consider too, which writer Tetsuya Nomura has already revealed will link up with the ending of Part 3.
If Square Enix wanted to keep the series going, I guess a video game adaptation of Advent Children could theoretically be possible, and would get more people to actually interact with the story of that movie. It sounds as though there aren’t any concrete plans just yet, and I still have my fingers crossed that Square Enix will revisit Dirge of Cerberus one day. Whatever it has planned, I’m on board regardless.
