Justin Rose outlasted J.J. Spaun in a three-hole playoff to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Rose birdied the 18th hole on the third time of playing the 18th in the playoff to capture the opening leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Rose forced a playoff thanks to four birdies on his final five holes. He then matched Spaun for the first two playoff holes before winning the third time through on the 18th.
With the win, Rose catapulted himself into the top five of the FedEx Cup standings ahead of next week’s BMW Championship.

Rose’s playoff win boosted him up into fourth place in the FedEx Cup standings. He earned 2,000 points for the victory.
Spaun moved up five spots to third place in the FedEx Cup standings. He used birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to work his way into the playoff.
Both Rose and Spaun beat out Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood for the best 72-hole score.
Scheffler, the FedEx Cup points leader, used a final-round 67 to finish in a tie for third with Fleetwood at 15-under.
Fleetwood once again missed out on his first PGA Tour title. A bogey on the 17th hole cost him a spot alongside Rose and Spaun in the playoff.
All four of the week’s top finishers are now in the top 10 of the FedEx Cup standings. Scheffler owns a commanding lead over the rest of the field going into the BMW and Tour Championships.
J.T. Poston earned the 50th and final spot at next week’s BMW Championship. He moved up one spot and was one five golfers to jump over the cut. The top 50 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings advanced from the 70-player field.
Jordan Spieth and Wyndham Clark were among the golfers that fell out of the top 50 this week. Min Woo Lee, Jake Knapp and Aldrich Potgieter also dropped from the top 50.
The top 30 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will move on from the BMW Championship to the Tour Championship. There’s less than 300 points between 30th and 50th places going into the BMW.
