Darius McCrary, best known for playing Eddie Winslow on the popular ’90s sitcom Family Matters, was in jail Friday afternoon, having been there since Sunday, according to online records of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office viewed by Entertainment Weekly.
McCrary was taken in at the city’s border between the United States and Mexico on an outstanding warrant for missing a court appearance in Michigan, regarding missed child support.
His charge was listed as a felony, and his court date set for Oct. 15.
The actor’s rep, Ann Barlow, said in a statement to EW, “He did not know at the time that he had a warrant, or he would’ve taken care of it. He was going to Tijuana, Mexico, partnering with a real estate developer that was building homes for the homeless in Tijuana. Mr. McCrary was there to speak encouragement and light to the homeless.”
She added, “The missed court appearance that the warrant was stemming from was only because Oakland County sent the notice to appear in court to his P.O. Box, giving him only three days to appear in court.”
Barlow noted that McCrary wasn’t checking his P.O. Box as frequently because he was sick. She alleged that, when McCrary opened the notice, he had already missed the date, and “the judge was immediately notified with a doctor’s note that he had COVID.”
EW has reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
McCrary made a name for himself on ABC’s TGIF show Family Matters, from 1989 to 1998, but he has a slew of other credits. He’s appeared on other TV series including The Young and the Restless, from 2009 to 2011; Monogamy, from 2018 to 2021; The Leftovers in 2015; Anger Management in 2012; and the 2005 sitcom Committed. McCrary was also cast in movies such as Mississippi Burning (1988), Transformers (2007), and Saw VI (2009).
Off-screen, McCrary has had legal struggles over the years. In February 2019, PEOPLE reported that he’d nearly finalized his divorce with Tammy Brawner. She had filed in 2017, citing irreconcilable differences. He’s previously been arrested for failing to pay child support.

Brawner was awarded full custody of their toddler daughter, Zoey, according to PEOPLE. McCrary’s former partner cited concerns about the child’s safety in his care, and the court ordered him to have monitored visitation and to attend classes on parenting and for drug and alcohol abuse and batterer intervention, PEOPLE reported.
The actor was in the headlines for a much happier reason in December 2020, when he and Kellie Shanygne Williams, who played his sister Laura on Family Matters, reunited to once again play siblings in the 2020 rom-com Christmas in Carolina.
