‘Family Matters’ Actor Darius McCrary Arrested at U.S. Border

Actor being held without bail in San Diego after missing Michigan court appearance allegedly stemming from missed child support payments

Family Matters actor Darius McCrary was arrested earlier this week at the U.S.-Mexico border on an out-of-state felony warrant.

McCrary, who portrayed Eddie Winslow on the hit Nineties sitcom, was taken into custody by United States Border Patrol on Oct. 5 for what authorities called a “fugitive arrest.” The actor is currently being held without bail at a San Diego, California jail as he awaits an Oct. 15 court date.

McCrary’s rep told TMZ the arrest warrant was ordered in Michigan, where McCrary allegedly missed a court appearance regarding his failure to pay child support. The actor has twice been arrested over missed child support payments, most recently in 2023, with court documents revealing at the time that he had an outstanding payment of over $52,000.

According to People, McCrary’s legal issues stem from his lengthy and acrimonious divorce from former Harlem Globetrotters player Tammy Brawner. The pair announced plans to split in 2017, which was followed by two-year-long court battle that finalized the divorce in 2019. As part of that settlement, McCrary agreed to provide $1,366 a month in child support for the pair’s daughter.

McCrary played the teenaged Eddie Winslow on Family Matters from 1989 to 1998. The actor has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows since then, including appearances on Anger Management, Star, Snowfall, and The Young and the Restless. Most recently, he portrayed James Brown in 2020’s American Soul, a BET series about Soul Train host Don Cornelius.
