Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is easily this year’s biggest surprise package, as developer Sandfall Games came out of nowhere to deliver what many see as one of the best RPGs ever made. Understandably, a lot of talk surrounding Sandfall is about what the studio plans on making next, whether it be a new Clair Obscur game, or something completely different.
Sandfall itself hasn’t said much about its future plans, with our only hint coming from COO François Meurisse that the studio is digging into “the ideas we already have for the next game”. We have no idea what Sandfall is working on right now, but thanks to a new interview, we know that the studio doesn’t plan on totally leaving Clair Obscur behind.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Could Be Getting A Sequel Or DLC
In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 creative director Guillaume Broche was asked what the thought process is at Sandfall about the potential for Clair Obscur to become a franchise. Understandably, Broche doesn’t give away too many details, but he does say that Expedition 33 “is not the end” of the series.
“Clair Obscur is the franchise name,” says Broche. “Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise. Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.”
It seems to me like that’s a pretty nailed-on confirmation that we’ll see another Clair Obscur game in the future, or even potentially a piece of DLC for Expedition 33. I’m leaning towards a new game though, as Broche mentions elsewhere in the interview that he likes to forget about previous work when he “writes sequels”, to try and stop previous work from influencing him. Did he potentially just give the game away right there?
We won’t know for sure what Sandfall is working on until it’s ready to show us itself, but I’m sure many people out there will be hoping for a return to the world of Clair Obscur. However, even if the next game from Sandfall is completely new, it’s nice to know that Clair Obscur is still in the grand plans for the studio.
