Previously on Fango, we debuted some cards from the horror set Duskmourn: House of Horror, then some squid monsters from their sci-fi set Edge of Eternities. Magic: The Gathering’s next set is based on Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, and they reached out asking if we wanted to debut some new cards. My one request: they have to be horror-based because this is FANGORIA, and they didn’t disappoint.
If you are a fan of the Spider-Man comics, you know there are horror elements from time to time in the franchise: Alien Symbiotes, a vampire scientist, and Carnage, to name a few. Hell, Evil Dead director Sam Raimi directed three Spider-Man movies. So it might initially seem like a stretch to cover Spider-Man, but we think the cards below make the case.
First up, we have the Vampire Scientist, Morbius the Living Vampire. An uncommon legendary creature with flying, vigilance, lifelink, and the ability to pay one blue and black mana to “exile this card from your graveyard: Look at the top three cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.” I’m not sure Morbius will make for a good commander, but I can see some potential running this guy in a deck.

Next up, we have a reprint of an uncommon card, Infernal Grasp. An instant costing one colorless and one black mana with “Destroy target creature. You lose 2 life.” This time, it’s a mythic card with classic Spider-Man cover art by Erik Larson and Randy Emberlin from The Amazing Spider-Man #347, featuring Venom holding up the skull of Spider-Man. Frankly, I didn’t know if I wanted Spider-Man cards in MtG but seeing classic cover art on cards is rad, and now I must track these down when they come out.

Last up, we have another uncommon, Alien Symbiosis. An enchantment costing one colorless and one black mana with “Enchant creature. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1, has menace, and is a Symbiote in addition to its other types. You may cast this card from your graveyard by discarding a card in addition to paying its other costs.” Cards are still being revealed, and I’m sure we will learn more about the Symbiote abilities, but for now, this is a good little card that I can see sliding into a lot of decks and probably great for drafts.

Thwip into Magic: The Gathering’s Spider-Man set on September 26. Check in with your local comic and card shops to see when they are having a pre-release event. And while you are there, maybe pick up the latest issue of FANGORIA.
