The Keanu Reeves-led action series John Wick fully redefined the revenge-action genre, and many tried to replicate its formula. Netflix has now joined the game with the perfect replacement for John Wick fans.
The South Korean Netflix series Trigger just premiered on the platform on Jul. 25. After just 10 episodes, the series received praise and immediately became a hit. The John Wick-esque replacement action series Trigger is currently in seventh place on Top 10 Shows, FlixPatrol indicates.
Immediately after its release, Trigger added 2.9 million views and 22.5 million hours viewed in just two days for the week between Jul. 21 and 27. It entered the Top 10 charts in 20 countries. Since then, it has continued to stay in the global charts, proving to be an exciting watch.
The action series is a drama about gun violence and is set in a gun-free South Korea. The series follows a police officer, Lee Do, and his unlikely partner, Moon Baek, as they start to investigate an underground network of gun distributors.
The action thriller drama comes from director Kwon Oh-seung, and stars Kim Nam-gil (Karma, The Fiery Priest) as Lee Do, Kim Young-kwang (Somebody, Call It Love) as Moon Baek, Park Hoon (Descendants of the Sun, Memories of Alhambra) as Gu Jeong-man, Gil Hae-yeon (The Silent Sea, In Her Place) as Oh Kyung-sook, Kim Won Hae (Strong Girl: Bong-soon) as Cho Hyun-sik, Kim Joong-hee (Squid Game) as Reporter Wang, Lee Suk (Squid Game) as Jeon Won-Seong.
Speaking about the series’ inspiration, director Kwon Oh-seung told Tudum that he was inspired by the international crimes on the news. “We’re so lucky that guns aren’t readily available in Korea, with tensions and conflicts running so high. If I found a gun right in front of me, what would I do?”
The director continued, “It was important that the characters who eventually pick up a gun were not special or extreme. They had to be ordinary people we could easily come across in real life. We have become desensitized to many issues in our society because we are too often exposed to them through the news.”
Oh-seung explained Trigger explores what happens when regular people “intersect with the availability of a gun. Trigger is a story about who picks up the guns and why.“
Trigger Debuted With a Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
The action series has attracted many subscribers to watch the series, and the critics understand why. Trigger has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics, although the rating comes from only six reviews. Although it’s likely the rating will fluctuate as more opinions come through, the show’s strong viewership numbers and initial reaction are encouraging.
Decider‘s Joel Keller wrote, “Trigger tries to address some big issues via what seems like a straightforward case about illegal weapons. But those big issues underpin what looks to be an action-filled thriller.” LeisureByte.com‘s Archi Sengupta notes “Trigger is absolute arresting, as it tells a very shocking and impactful tale extremely well,” while Heaven of Horror‘s Karina Adelgaard points out that, “While this is listed as an action-thriller, it often feels more like a psychological crime thriller.”
