Eugenio Suarez, one of the hottest names in the cycle before the trade deadline, could return to one of his old teams by next Thursday. But there are plenty of other suitors.
Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reported that 12 teams have inquired about Suarez as of Thursday morning. The Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds, two of his former teams, are included.
The Reds are among the teams the D-backs have mutual interest in working out a Suarez trade with, according to The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans. Suarez played six seasons for the Reds from 2015-21 before being traded to the Mariners, where he played from 2022-23.
Suarez was the last Diamondback player on the field after the loss against the Houston Astros on Wednesday, potentially his last home game for Arizona.
The D-backs are a team that is being heavily watched near the deadline. President and CEO Derrick Hall said Thursday morning that the team needs to improve and bring assets.
They have several other players like Zac Gallen, who are in a contract season, leading the team to be sellers.
What could the Reds offer for Eugenio Suarez?
Rosecrans said that the Diamondbacks could get a young pitcher in return for Suarez. He reports the D-backs have some interest in prospect Chase Petty.
The Diamondbacks need controllable, young pitching. The Reds are unlikely to part with Chase Burns, who struck out 10 in Tuesday’s loss to the Nationals, or Rhett Lowder, who is currently injured. But the team does have right-hander Chase Petty, a promising talent, even if he’s having a down season. Petty, 22, has made two starts and three appearances for the Reds this season, allowing 14 runs (13 earned) in six innings.
The Diamondbacks are looking to add young starting pitchers. They could potentially trade Gallen and Merrill Kelly at the deadline or lose them during the offseason.
Many pitchers won’t be available at the start of next season due to Tommy John surgeries, including Corbin Burnes, Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk.
Rosecrans also wrote what other Reds players could be dealt to Arizona.
The Reds also have a surplus of young middle infielders at the lower levels, such as Sammy Stafura, Tyson Lewis and newly drafted Steele Hall. Another shortstop, switch-hitting Edwin Arroyo, is in Double A, and could draw interest. With Elly De La Cruz at shortstop and under team control through the 2029 season, the team could deal from its surplus of young shortstops.
According to reports, the Mariners, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees are also part of the 12 teams interested in Suarez.
“This team, it mean(s) a lot to me and all the last two years being with my career changed everything here in Arizona. I am who I am right now because the last two years being great and this is … a lot about this team,” Suarez said on Wednesday.
The Diamondbacks are on the road again for their next nine games and could be fielding a new team when they come back home after the trade deadline.
