ESPN shakes up FPI Top 25 rankings after wild Week 2 of college football

ESPN shook up its FPI Top 25 rankings after a wild Week 2 of college football and there will surely be discussion once again. Plus, there’s a new No. 1 team!

There were blowouts all over the place, so don’t get us wrong, some of these results could be seen coming from a mile away. But there were also upsets!

So without further ado, let’s dissect ESPN’s latest rankings per their FPI metrics. We start at the top!

Oregon absolutely waxed Oklahoma State 69-3 to improve to 2-0. This game wasn’t even close from the opening whistle and they’re the new No. 1 team in the FPI.

Dante Moore was 16-of-21 for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Noah Whittington and Jayden Limar combined for 178 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. The Ducks defense forced two pick-sixes.

Texas dropped a spot in the FPI due to Oregon’s rise this week. But, the Longhorns dominated with a 38-7 win over San Jose State.

Arch Manning threw for 295 yards, four touchdowns, one interception and ran for another touchdown. This was a get right game for Texas and friends.

How do you follow up a win over Texas in Week 1? Well, you beat Grambling State 70-0 at home and remain in the third spot in the FPI.

Julian Sayin had 306 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Bo Jackson, no not that one, had 108 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Jeremiah Smith was responsible for 119 yards and two scores on just five catches.

It seems like Alabama took its frustrations out on Louisiana-Monroe this weekend and there was no early-Nick Saban upset type of game. A 73-0 win? Yeah, that’ll boost your FPI rating.

Ty Simpson was perfect, 17-of-17 for 226 yards and three touchdowns. The Crimson Tide built a 42-0 lead at halftime before probably arguing for a running clock in the second half.

5. USC (+1)

The Trojans are now 2-0 this season following a 59-20 win over Georgia Southern. Jayden Maiava looked awesome, throwing for 412 yards and four touchdowns. It’s early, but Lincoln Riley has one heck of a QB.

With the win, USC moved up one spot in the FPI ratings this weekend. The Trojans have their Big Ten opener next week at Purdue.

It was a less than stellar, but controlling win over Austin Peay, 28-6. The Bulldogs dropped two spots as others shifted in the FPI.

Nate Frazier led the way on the ground with 69 yards and two touchdowns. Chauncey Bowens also had 56 yards and two touchdowns to round out a one-score-per-quarter performance.

Penn State kept it rolling with a 34-0 win over FIU on Saturday. Drew Allar had 200 yards and two touchdowns in the win while Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

Still, the Nittany Lions dropped two spots in the FPI while others like Alabama and USC moved up. Penn State has Villanova at home next week before hosting Oregon on September 27th.

Ole Miss fell in the FPI this week, but got a win on the road against Kentucky. The Wildcats seemingly always give the Rebels fits.

Austin Simmons struggled, throwing for 235 yards and two interceptions, but did score one on the ground. It was a battle of ground games, but Ole Miss’ offense outpaced Kentucky in the end, getting a 30-23 win.

Tennessee remained in the top 10 but dropped a spot this week. Still, the Vols beat East Tennessee State 72-17 at home.

Joey Aguilar threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns. Star Thomas had 69 yards on the ground and three scores. Heck, backup QB Jake Merklinger had 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame moved down a spot in the FPI this week, but remained in the top 10. The Fighting Irish were off after last week’s loss to Miami.

They’ll be back in action at home against a tough Texas A&M team, so there’s no easy slate here. But, Notre Dame will definitely be favored at home.
