It will be art imitating life on an upcoming episode of Brilliant Minds. Grey’s Anatomy alum Eric Dane is set for a key guest-starring role on Season 2 of the NBC drama series. The network also released a couple on-set photos of Dane and star Zachary Quinto, which you can view below.
Dane, who revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with ALS, will appear as Matthew in episode 209, a heroic firefighter who struggles to share his ALS diagnosis with his family.
Per the Mayo Clinic, “Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis…is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS causes loss of muscle control.” Long-called Lou Gehrig’s disease, its exact cause is not known, but there is no cure, and while treatment can’t reverse the condition, it can slow the progression of symptoms.
Dane recently missed a planned Grey’s Anatomy reunion at the 77th Emmy Awards following his diagnosis. He revealed he was “getting stitches” in his head after losing balance and falling in his kitchen, shortly before he was scheduled to present with fellow cast alum Jesse Williams.
Inspired by the extraordinary life and work of world-famous author and physician Oliver Sacks, Brilliant Minds follows Dr. Oliver Wolf (Quinto), a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier – the human mind – while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.
The cast also includes Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, Teddy Sears, and Donna Murphy.

Best known for his work on Grey’s Anatomy, Dane is in production on Season 3 of HBO’s Euphoria and can currently be seen starring opposite Jensen Ackles in Prime Video’s thriller drama series, Countdown. Dane is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360 and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
