Emma Stone can’t believe Andrew Garfield lied about ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

It’s been four years since Andrew Garfield proved that unlike another friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, he can keep a secret from the masses — and Emma Stone still can’t believe it.

Stone, who starred opposite Garfield as the Gwen Stacy to his Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, confirmed that she had been among the throngs of people kept in the dark about him reprising his role for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home during a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy, Sad, Confused podcast.

“I asked him if he was going to be in that and he was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,'” Stone recalled during the the interview released on Monday alongside her Bugonia costar Jesse Plemons. “I was like, ‘What? Oh, I guess that means no, right?’ But it wasn’t no, it was yes.”

To be fair, Garfield had to keep a tight lid on the secret considering how many fan theories were spot-on when it came to the film uniting him with Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire — who played other iterations of Marvel’s web-swinger in previous movies — in the multiversal blockbuster and having the three Spider-Men join forces.

While Holland is known for letting spoilers slip, Garfield managed to play it cool rather than letting on the fact he’d be reprising his role from The Amazing Spider-Man films.

“Emma kept on texting me,” he told Horowitz on his Happy, Sad, Confused podcast in 2022. “She was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ I kept it going, even with her.”

Despite being deceived, Stone, who dated Garfield for four years, conceded that the actor’s dedication to the secret was honorable. “Good for him. He kept it really close to the vest,” she told Horowitz and Plemons.

The Poor Things actress also admitted that she still hasn’t seen the film but said she will “eventually.” Perhaps she’s waiting to see if Garfield appears in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day as well.

Clearly fans couldn’t get enough of the three Spider-Man actors together since Garfield is already fielding rumors that he’s signed on to the latest installment of the blockbuster franchise.

“I’m gonna disappoint you,” he told British GQ in a story published in January. “Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”

The upcoming fourth Spider-Man film in the MCU, which will be helmed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, began production in Glasgow last month. The film picks up after No Way Home ended on a massive reset for the titular web-slinging Peter Parker (Holland), as he was erased from everyone’s minds, including that of his friends and loved ones.

While Garfield and Maguire (supposedly) won’t be making appearances, the film does have a stacked cast. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will reprise their roles as MJ and Ned, respectively, with Jon Bernthal starring as Frank Castle/The Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Michael Mando as the Scorpion, and Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink in an undisclosed role.

Earlier this month, Entertainment Weekly also learned that Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will connect with Brand New Day, jumping off the crossover in No Way Home when Peter hired Matt Murdock (aka Daredevil played by Charlie Cox), who used both his legal and vigilante superpowers to help the young hero.

Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum revealed the news in an exclusive interview with EW at New York Comic Con.

“We are communicating a lot with the team on Spider-Man: Brand New Day to make sure that there’s coherence there,” Winderbaum told EW. “We don’t want to spoil anything, but it very much exists in the same world and it is important.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is slated to swing into theaters July 31, 2026.
