Ed Orgeron, who served as LSU football’s head coach from 2016-2021 and led the team to an undefeated season and national title in 2019, “would love” to guide the Tigers once again, he told ESPN’s Evan Cohen on Unsportsmanlike.
“I’d love to. Are you kidding me? I just gotta get in my truck, I’ll be there today!” Orgeron said.
LSU is in the market for a new head coach after parting ways with head coach Brian Kelly.
Kelly’s team dropped to 5-3 (2-3 in SEC) after a 49-25 home loss to No. 3 Texas A&M on Saturday. He had taken over for Orgeron after the 2021 season and began his tenure with a pair of 10-win campaigns. LSU went to the SEC Championship Game in 2022 and finished 12th in the Associated Press poll in 2023.
However, LSU fell out of the Top 25 of the AP poll to end 2024 entirely following a 9-4 season, and the Tigers particularly struggled this year as losers of three of four games.
LSU has parted with Kelly, leaving the team looking for answers to try and find past success. Orgeron was the leader of one of the greatest college football teams of all time in 2019, when LSU averaged 48.4 points per game led by future NFL superstars Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase. That team notably outscored Oklahoma and Clemson in the College Football Playoff, 105-53.
LSU faltered in its next two seasons, going a combined 11-12. Coach O’s time in town came to an end before the bowl game in 2021, and he hasn’t coached since.
It’s clear he wants to head back to Baton Rouge ASAP, though. The problem is that LSU’s list of candidates might be quite strong, filled with coaches who have found much success in the past few years. Potential candidates include Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady and Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key, among others.
The 64-year-old Orgreon has thrown his hat in the ring, however, and he can lay claim to leading LSU to its best season in program history.
