NFL trade grades: Tank Bigsby dealt from Jaguars to Eagles – ESPN
Eagles grade: C-. Jaguars grade: A. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman wins more trades than anyone, but he doesn’t win ‘em all. In Bigsby, the Eagles acquire a very solid runner. The 2023 third-round pick accumulated an impressive 124 rush yards over expectation last season, per NFL Next Gen Stats, after a disappointing rookie campaign. But that’s all he is, which is his downside. Bigsby offers almost nothing in the receiving game; he has only eight career receptions. He has pass blocked on only 33 snaps in his pro career. And he evidently didn’t win the starting job in Jacksonville this season despite not facing particularly stiff competition in Travis Etienne Jr. and fourth-round rookie Bhayshul Tuten. This trade makes it clear that the Eagles felt they needed running back depth behind Saquon Barkley. They have Will Shipley, who figures to be more of a receiving complement and backup — very different from Bigsby. But my first reaction was, wow, that’s a lot for a backup at a nonpremium position who doesn’t catch passes, especially considering how much Philadelphia has already invested at running back with Barkley. Even with Bigsby under control for another rookie contract year in 2026, this is a bit much for my liking. Bigsby could also partner with Shipley on kick returns after having returned 11 kicks in his career. It’s a more important role now than before given the precipitous drop in touchbacks, but it doesn’t change that the Eagles gave up a lot for Bigsby.

Eagles trade grade: B-. Most teams would likely get crushed for giving up that type of collateral for a rotational running back. But the Eagles aren’t most teams. General manager Howie Roseman has quite the track record for acquiring talented players at a low cost before they go on to play big roles for his team. Plus, Bigsby is under contract through 2026, so he brings a bit of long-term value to the defending champs.

The Eagles have a lot of picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, so, it’s not like the team needs to be precious about hanging on to them. And with the Birds likely planning to heavily rely upon their running game, they can afford to improve their running back depth. That’s what they did here by adding Bigsby, who is signed through 2026. It’s worth noting that Bigsby also has some experience as a kick returner; he’s returned 11 kickoffs for a 28.5 average in the regular season over the last three years. He had a 35-yard return in the 2025 preseason and a 45-yard return in the 2024 preseason, which is when the new kickoff format first went into effect.

With Bigsby out of the fold, Jacksonville’s primary kick returners figure to be Parker Washington and Bhayshul Tuten. The team’s belief in Tuten and fellow Day 3 rookie LeQuint Allen allowed the Jaguars to continue to stock draft capital. Those two will mix in on offense behind lead back Travis Etienne, who posted over 150 yards from scrimmage in Week 1.
Tanking – Iggles Blitz
These clips are from previous years, but Bigby just turned 24 so he’s still that player. The Eagles now have a really good RB room. Saquon Barkley is arguably the best RB in the league. Shipley looked good on Thursday before getting hurt, going 3-26 and setting up the first TD. AJ Dillon had a good run in the game and finished 3-10. Bigsby gives them a young RB with experience and good natural talent to add to the mix. It is possible the team could cut Dillon and add him to the PS. Or maybe Shipley has to go to IR for a few weeks. We’ll see wwhat they do in terms of moves. The one thing I take away from this move is that the Eagles are committed to being a running team. If there was any question of whether they might shift to more of a passing attack, this trade would tell you no. That formula led them to a Super Bowl last year so I have no problem with them sticking with it. The offense bogged down in the second half, but the team still finished with 158 rushing yards and 3 TDs. You’re going to win a lot of games with numbers like that.

But the Eagles think Bigsby, 24, could help them out on kickoff returns. They signed returner Avery Williams in the offseason but he did not make the team. Neither did second-year receiver Ainias Smith. Without them, the kick return options are Shipley, Dillon, and John Metchie, who returned his first career kick on Thursday, carrying the ball from the 8-yard line to the 28 on the opening kickoff of the second half after Shipley left the game. Fullback Ben VanSumeren was getting reps there, too, but was carted off the field Thursday and is now on injured reserve with a long-term injury. Bigsby, as pointed out by ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, has only seven kickoff returns over the last two seasons (and just 11 for his career), but his 0.2 expected points added per return rates him 19th among all players with five-plus returns in 2024 and through Week 1 in 2025. It’s a small sample, but Bigsby, who also returned kicks as a freshman at Auburn, averaged 32.5 yards on six return attempts in 2024, when the league average was 27.6. Turpin, for context, averaged 33.5 yards, a league-high for players with at least 15 returns in 2024.

A.J. Brown has had a lot of great games in an Eagles uniform. In fact, in three full seasons since joining the Eagles, Brown has had 17 games with over 100 receiving yards. But there was a reason Nick Sirianni singled out Brown’s one-catch performance in Thursday’s opener in front of the entire team. “What about that mental toughness by A.J. Brown?” Sirianni said. “‘OK, the ball hasn’t come to me in three quarters.’ That might be the first time that’s ever happened to him in his career as a football player because he’s such a good player and you’re always trying to find ways to do that. But he makes a play in a critical moment when his number was called. You look for moments like that to really show and preach the stuff that’s important to your core values and your culture. And that was just a great example by one of our captains of, hey, it didn’t go exactly the way you wanted it to go or any of us envisioned it going. That’s life, that’s football. But when called upon and the ball did come your way, you made this huge play.”

THREE DOWN: DT Jalen Carter. This is what they call low-hanging fruit. Carter took the field in the 2025 NFL Kickoff Game, but it’s still hard to fathom how he could spit on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and earn an ejection before ever playing a down in that season-opening win. The Eagles need Carter to dominate in the same fashion he did while earning All-Pro honors last year. That moment proved he still has plenty of growing up to do.
No Jalen Carter resolution on Monday points to no suspension – PFT
As a practical matter, no decision points to no suspension. If the league were going to ban Carter from the upcoming game against the Chiefs, a quick decision is vital to an expedient resolution of his appeal. Typically, suspensions land on Monday and a decision is issued on the appeal by Tuesday. Precedent for spitting points to a fine. Especially since the timing of Carter’s ejection simulates a one-game suspension. He was disqualified before a single snap from scrimmage.

DT Jordan Davis: The fourth-year defensive tackle played one of the best games of his NFL career in the opener. He recorded six total tackles, one for loss, and added some pass-rush pressure, and he stepped up with Jalen Carter out of the game. Davis played stout against the run, was consistent with his pad level, and kept his energy level high, playing 53 snaps.

The NFL average was just a tick over 60% this year which really illustrates how much things change every year. The Rams led the NFL with nearly 76% of their roster being return players from their roster one year ago. When Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had his usual session with local reporters on Monday, the biggest question on their minds was the injury to wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who had been reported to have suffered a dislocated shoulder in a collision with tight end Travis Kelce on the third offensive play of Friday’s 27-21 Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. So Reid addressed it in his opening statement. “I know Xavier is the big question,” volunteered the head coach. “He’s rehabbing and working his shoulder. We’ll just see where it goes, day-by-day, here. We’ll see where we end up.”
Are the Chiefs Cooked? – The Ringer
Herbert was calm, decisive, and ruthlessly efficient, completing 25 of 34 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns. It was possibly the most comfortable he’s ever looked against a Chiefs defense, even in the game’s biggest moments. Herbert beat a patented Spags blitz with a 23-yard touchdown strike to Johnston to extend the Chargers’ lead to nine points in the fourth quarter. And when Kansas City’s defense needed one last stop to give Mahomes a final shot, Herbert iced the game himself, scrambling untouched for a first down on third-and-14. Chiefs star pass rusher Chris Jones let Herbert break contain, with all of his teammates locked in man coverage behind him. The YouTube broadcast caught Tranquill yelling at Jones after the play. It’s going to be hard not to overreact to this sloppy and dysfunctional performance from the Chiefs. Even the special teams unit was hit-and-miss. Harrison Butker nailed a 59-yard field goal after rushing onto the field in a zero-timeout situation at the end of the first half, but he later missed an extra point attempt. They need answers fast.

Will George Pickens keep his cool? Only four targets in a game is low compared to what Pickens was used to in Pittsburgh. While he knows he’s not the franchise WR in Dallas, it’s still a contract year for a guy who’s already seen his relationship with one team go sour. It’s been all fun and games during the offseason, when practice reps are generally going to go as designed. But in the regular season, if Prescott leans more on Lamb, Ferguson, and his more familiar receivers, will Pickens keep being a good citizen? This isn’t a prediction, but just a logical concern given how Pickens’ last marriage ended. Hopefully, future games allow for a more balanced attack. The Eagles winning time-of-possession by about 10 minutes limited how much work Dallas had to spread around. And given their familiarity with the opponent, it made sense for Prescott and Lamb to do their thing. Hopefully, Pickens sees that too.

Russell Wilson — This really could be “overall offense,” but the quarterback is the face of all of it, and Wilson did NOTHING on Sunday to quell the clamor for rookie Jaxson Dart to start. We are one week into the season and Daboll, while saying the loss wasn’t Wilson’s fault, would not proclaim the 14-year veteran as the Week 2 starter against the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson, eight carries for 44 yards, made a couple of plays with his legs. He could not, though, get anything going. He went 17 of 37 for 168 yards. The offense was dull and lifeless for the most part. It doesn’t help anyone, except the Indianapolis Colts, that Daniel Jones went 22 of 29 for 272 yards and a touchdown as the Colts routed Miami 33-8 on Sunday. Wilson was, and is, supposed to be a clear upgrade over Jones. It did not look that way on Sunday. And the calls for Dart will only grow louder.

Loser: The Detroit Lions. The Lions have been the great question not enough people were asking. There’s been this eternal faith that Dan Campbell’s brilliance would be able to transcend the losses of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn as offensive and defensive coordinator. It’s only one week, but my goodness it was a hell of a poor display. Detroit just looked lost on both sides of the ball. A team normally rich with answers for every situation instead came up with nothing, and this was an early statement game for both the Lions and Packers. They needed to come out and show the world that they’re still the big dogs in the NFC North, no matter how much hype was behind Green Bay. Instead they were utterly embarrassed. This was arguably the worst performance under Campbell since the Lions began their ascent. It’s too early to write off the Lions, but it’s worth watching to see if either of the new coordinators can pivot and come up with answers. Filling the shoes of Johnson and Glenn was always going to be tough, but that was an abysmal showing in Lambeau.
