The Eagles (4-0) are home this week to host the Denver Broncos (2-2) at 1 p.m. at the Linc.
Here are some key matchups to watch:
Jordan Mailata, Lane Johnson vs. Nik Bonitto, Jonathan Cooper
Nik Bonitto isn’t a household name like Myles Garrett or Micah Parsons but the former second-round pick is playing as well as any edge rusher in the NFL so far this season. Through four games, Bonitto already has 4 1/2 sacks and 11 quarterback hits. And his running mate Johnathan Cooper is really good too. Bonitto is tied for third in the NFL in sacks and leads the NFL in QB pressures with 27, per NextGent Stats.
Here’s a look at the company keeping in that stat:
1. Nik Bonitto: 27
2. Micah Parsons: 26
t-3. Aidan Hutchinson: 22
t-3. George Karlaftis: 22
t-3. Will Anderson: 22
t-3. Tuli Tuipulotu: 22
Against the Bengals, Bonitto had 6 pressures on 19 pass rushes and had 1 1/2 sacks. He has generated 6+ pressures in all four games this season. He also leads the NFL with 14 quick pressures (under 3 seconds).
While Bonitto gets a handful of snaps on the left side of the defensive line, the overwhelming majority of his snaps come against left tackles. That creates a great matchup against Jordan Mailata in this game. On the other side, Cooper is also off to a good start too with 2 1/2 sacks in 4 games. Keep an eye on that matchup because Lane Johnson has been unable to finish his last two games. Cooper’s average get-off this season is .69 seconds, while Bonitto is right behind him at .72. To put that in perspective, Jalyx Hunt is leading the Eagles’ edge rushers in get-off speed at .85 seconds. This is some serious juice off the edge.
The Eagles’ offensive line hasn’t been as dominant in 2025 as we’re used to seeing but Mailata has been great. He ranks as PFF’s No. 3 graded offensive tackle. Mailata hadn’t given up a sack in four games and has surrendered just six pressures.
A.J. Brown vs. Patrick Surtain II
A.J. Brown was frustrated after his nine-target, two-catch game against the Buccaneers and things won’t get any easier for him in Week 5. He’ll be facing the NFL’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Patrick Surtain. Because Surtain is excellent, we should probably expect him to travel side to side with Brown in this game.
The 25-year-old former first-round pick from Alabama is the best cornerback in the NFL. He doesn’t have an interception yet this season after having four in 2024, but he has been just as sticky in coverage and he has been shutting down top receivers.
We saw that again in Week 4, when he shadowed Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase. Surtain lined up against Chase 13 times and allowed just 1 catch for 8 yards on 3 targets on Monday Night Football. This season, Surtain has given up just 11 caches on 17 targets for 122 yards. He has forced tight window throws at an absurd 58.8% clip, up from 25% in 2024 and his average target separation is just 1.3 yards. That’s super sticky in coverage. (To put it in perspective, Quinyon Mitchell is sitting at 44.4% and 1.6 yards of average separation.)
Meanwhile, Brown’s season has not yet gone to plan. The Eagles are winning but he is averaging just 37.8 yards per game through the first four.
Eagles red zone O vs. Broncos red zone D
The NFL’s best red zone offense faces off against the NFL’s best red zone defense in Week 5.
The Eagles have been perfect getting in the red zone this season. They have scored touchdowns on all 11 of their trips to the red zone and they were 3-for-3 in Week 4 against the Buccaneers. The next closest team in terms of red zone success is the Dolphins, who are 8-for-10 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Broncos have been great when the field condenses. They have given up just 3 touchdowns on their opponents’ 12 trips inside the 20-yard line. That 25% is the best in the NFL. The Chargers are at 31% and the Eagles are at 36%. The Bengals were 0-for-1 in the red zone against the Broncos in Week 4.
Something’s gotta give on Sunday.
Quinyon Mitchell vs. Courtland Sutton
While Surtain is the best cornerback in the NFL, Mitchell is coming on as a potential Pro Bowler and All-Pro. Even though Mitchell doesn’t yet have a regular season interception, he has been fantastic this season. And he has taken his game to even higher levels over the last two weeks against the Rams and Buccaneers, traveling with Davante Adams and Emeka Egbuka.
Here are Mitchell’s numbers against Egbuka and Adams the last two weeks:
vs. Egbuka: 22 matchups, 2 catches on 6 targets for 6 yards
vs. Adams: 27 matchups, 2 catches on 5 targets for 12 yards
The 29-year-old Sutton this season has 18 catches for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns. Since the start of the 2023 season, Sutton is fourth in the NFL with 21 touchdown catches. The only players with more are Amon-Ra St. Brown (28), Ja’Marr Chase (25) and Mike Evans (25).
Eagles run D vs. J.K. Dobbins
Through four games, the Eagles have the No. 21 rushing defense in the NFL, but 13th in EPA/rush. So they’ve been leaky at points this year but have mostly been a middle-of-the-pack running defense. The Eagles have not had a rusher go for over 100 yards against them yet this season; the closest was Kyren Williams, who had 94 in Week 3. The next closest running back was Bucky Irving with 63 rushing yards.
Dobbins, 26, isn’t a big threat to catch the ball out of the backfield but the 212-pound back is a good runner and is the Broncos’ best running back. He has 57 attempts for 323 yards and 3 touchdowns so far this season. He’s fourth in the NFL in rushing and is among the league leaders, averaging 1.7 rushing yards over expected per attempt. He is also averaging 3.8 yards after contact per attempt so he’s not always easy to bring down.
Vic Fangio vs. Bo Nix
This is Year 2 for the first-round pick Nix and he’s off to a good start in his NFL career. The former No. 12 overall pick led the Broncos to a 10-7 record last season and threw for 3,775 yards with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
In 2025, he has completed 65.7% of his passes for 861 yards with 7 touchdowns and 4 picks. Nix has been sacked just three times this year and has been pressured on just 21.9% of his dropbacks, which ranks 31st in the NFL. Fangio has been blitzing at a higher rate in general this season and if his front can’t get home against Nix, he might need to send some more pressure.
“He’s a lot like Baker Mayfield,” Eagles DC Vic Fangio said. “I think he might be Baker’s younger brother. Really good, really, really good.”
Remember last week when Baker Mayfield entered the Eagles game having not thrown an interception? Well, he had put the ball in harm’s way and that eventually showed up with an interception in a key moment. Mayfield leads the NFL with 9 turnover worthy plays, per PFF, Nix is tied for third in the league with 7 and a TWP% of 4.3. The Eagles again might have to make the most of their opportunities.
