EA Shutting Down AAA Game Permanently in 48 Hours

An EA game is set to shut down, permanently, in 48 hours. That said, it is not being delisted. While it will be stripped of much of its functionality and appeal when the game’s servers shut down, EA is opting not to remove it from sale. So, those on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One can continue to purchase the EA game, as well as those on PS5 and Xbox Series X via backward compatibility, but there isn’t a ton of reason to purchase the title. Not only is it losing much of its functionality in 48 hours, but it is a 12-year-old game to begin with, making the decision not to simply delist it all the more peculiar. What this does suggest is that the EA game continues to sell an appreciable number of copies.

Those who own Need for Speed: Rivals have roughly two days left to enjoy its online functionality because on October 6, the servers are being turned off. We’ve known the game is shutting down since this summer, but now the turn-off date is upon us. That said, it doesn’t seem many are interested in returning to the racing game to see it off, or at least that’s what active players on Steam suggest. Over the last 24 hours, the EA game has barely peaked above 100 concurrent players.

About the Game

Need for Speed: Rivals was released by Ghost Games and EA back in 2013 as the 20th installment in the racing sim series, and the first from the former, who took over the reins of the franchise from Criterion between 2013 and 2020. And it was a decent debut for Ghost Games, who played it pretty safe with the release, which earned a Metacritic range of 75 to 80, and which sold appreciably. That said, there have been six major Need for Speed games since, so it’s hardly relevant anymore.

With Need for Speed games shutting down, and no word of a new installment in the series, the series is a little bit of a weird place right now. In fact, the latest reports are that the series may be shelved for a while. Meanwhile, more broadly pertaining to EA, there are a few more shutdowns still to come this month.

All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. Will you be booting up Need for Speed Rivals one last time before its servers are shut down?
