The Justice Department has fired one of its own and charged him with felony assault after he threw a sub sandwich at a federal officer.
A video of Sean Charles Dunn throwing a sandwich at the chest of an officer amid President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of law enforcement in Washington, D.C., went viral earlier this week. Dunn, at point blank range, hurled the sandwich at the officers chest before attempting to sprint away. Dunn reportedly told cops: “I did it. I threw a sandwich.”
Former Fox News Host turned U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro posted a video on social media Wednesday in which she bragged about having charged Dunn with a felony. “He thought it was funny. Well, he doesn’t think it’s funny today, because we charged him with a felony assault on a police officer, and we’re going to back the police to the hilt. So there — stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else,” she said before posing for the camera.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on Thursday that the individual had indeed been arrested and “charged with felony assault on a federal officer.” Attorney General Pam Bondi later wrote on social media that “if you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you.”
“I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — NO LONGER. Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony,” Bondi added. “This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ.”
“You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement,” the attorney general wrote.
Bondi does, however, have some level of tolerance for disrespect to law enforcement among her staff.
Last week, NPR obtained video footage of current DOJ employee Jared Wise outside of the Capitol on Jan. 6. Wise was filmed calling police officers protecting the Capitol “Nazi” and “Gestapo.” Wise also yelled “kill em,” as his fellow rioters clashed with law enforcement.
In a statement to NPR, a spokesperson for the Justice Department said that “Jared Wise is a valued member of the Justice Department and we appreciate his contributions to our team.”
The Trump administration also pardoned hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters, some of whom beat and battled with cops as they stormed the Capitol in an attempt to block the certification of Trump’s 2020 electoral loss.
Bondi’s Justice Department has nevertheless made a show of throwing the book at anyone who makes any sort of aggressive contact with law enforcement. Earlier this week, Emily Gabriella Sommer pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting, resisting or impeding a federal officer or employee. Sommer was arrested in May after allegedly spitting on former U.S. Attorney Ed Martin during a televised interview.
Sandwich or loogie, in the end the administration is not so much interested in preserving law and order, but in making an example of those who manage to embarrass them.
