This is Dan, an adorable dog who lives on a pristine property in Southern Virginia with his family. There, Dan gets to enjoy all that nature has to offer.
But recently, something happened that seems to have Dan contemplating nature instead.
On the property where Dan and his family live, there’s a crabapple tree. It’s a popular visiting spot for local deer, who like to munch on the fallen fruit around its base. But occasionally, one or two apples will be left behind, which Dan has grown fond of eating, too.
It’s unclear if Dan ever figured out where the apples on the ground were coming from, or that the tree was producing them. The other day, however, he appears to have had an “aha” moment.
While observing the tree, Dan actually saw an apple drop.
Like Isaac Newton before him, seeing the falling apple seems to have triggered something in Dan — the first threads of a realization about the laws of gravity. Like, if he were to wait long enough, surely another apple would succumb to gravity’s force, right?
And as Dan’s sister, McErin, shared in a post on X, the dog has been dedicating his time to testing that theory:
It’s been a few days now since the laws of gravitation unfurled themselves before Dan’s eyes, and based on his ongoing observations, it’s something he simply just can’t get past.
“I’m very impressed with his patience!” McErin told The Dodo.
Fortunately for Dan, who’s apparently still working out his nascent ideas about that well-established theory, the laws of gravity are irrefutable.
The apples remaining in the tree will indeed have to drop one day — and here’s to hoping Dan’s around when they do.
